Senior Data Engineer
About The Position
Headway is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to help build access to affordable, quality mental healthcare. The Data Engineering team develops and maintains the infrastructure supporting the company, partnering with Finance, Insurance Systems, Analytics, Product, and Data Science to keep Headway’s data platform scalable, reliable, and secure. The team is also working to make company data trustworthy, well-documented, and ready for use by AI tools. In this role, you will shape Headway’s data architecture by designing and implementing robust data pipelines, establishing data governance standards, and ensuring the platform meets the business’s growing needs. You will contribute to technical decisions across the data platform, including performance optimization and infrastructure-as-code, and help ensure AI-powered tools provide accurate, trustworthy answers using reliable underlying data.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of experience as a data engineer, building scalable systems and solving complex data problems in a fast-paced technology environment.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Experience with tools and services used in a modern data platform stack, such as Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, and Terraform.
- A pragmatic approach to building for current needs and future scale.
- Strong ownership and a bias toward action, especially in ambiguous situations.
- Empathy for teammates and stakeholders and a collaborative, cross-disciplinary mindset.
- Passion for Headway’s mission to make mental healthcare more accessible and affordable.
Nice To Haves
- Familiarity with visualization tools such as Metabase or Jupyter Notebooks.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and infrastructure for internal stakeholders and core business functions.
- Define and refine data governance, monitoring, and quality standards, including ensuring data generated or surfaced by AI tools is complete, correct, and traceable.
- Partner with Product and Engineering to advocate for data engineering best practices and address data needs early in the product lifecycle.
- Collaborate with Analytics, Data Science, and Infrastructure to evolve Headway’s data architecture.
- Own and drive technical decisions across the data platform, including performance optimization and infrastructure-as-code.
- Help shape how employees interact with company data through AI-powered tools by ensuring the underlying data layer is reliable.
