About The Position

Headway is hiring a Senior Data Engineer to help build access to affordable, quality mental healthcare across the United States. The Data Engineering team develops and maintains the infrastructure supporting the company and partners with Finance, Insurance Systems, Analytics, Product, and Data Science to keep Headway’s data platform scalable, reliable, and secure.

In this role, you will help shape Headway’s data architecture and build robust data pipelines, governance standards, and quality practices. You will also help ensure that data used by AI tools is trustworthy, documented, complete, correct, and traceable. You will work across teams to evolve the data platform and support the company’s growing needs.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience as a data engineer, building scalable systems and solving complex data problems in a fast-paced technology environment.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Experience with tools and services used in a modern data platform stack, such as Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, and Terraform.
• A pragmatic approach to building for current needs and future scale.
• A strong sense of ownership and bias toward action, particularly in ambiguous situations.
• Empathy for teammates and stakeholders and a collaborative, cross-disciplinary mindset.
• Passion for Headway’s mission to make mental healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with visualization tools such as Metabase or Jupyter Notebooks.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and infrastructure for internal stakeholders and core business functions.
• Define, develop, and refine company-wide data governance, monitoring, and quality standards, including standards for data generated or surfaced by AI tools.
• Partner with Product and Engineering to advocate for data engineering best practices and address data needs early in the product lifecycle.
• Work with Analytics, Data Science, and Infrastructure to continuously evolve Headway’s data architecture.
• Own and drive technical decisions across the data platform, including performance optimization and infrastructure-as-code.
• Help shape how employees interact with data through AI-powered tools by ensuring the underlying data layer can support accurate, trustworthy answers.
