The Senior Data Analyst is a key role on the 211 LA DAIS team, focused on turning 211 LA’s data into actionable, valuable business insights that inform decisions across the organization and for the leadership, county officials, funders, and community partners we serve. Working within the Agency's governed data warehouse environment (dbt + Amazon Redshift), the Senior Data Analyst develops complex SQL queries, designs and maintains trusted reports and dashboards using Tableau and Hex, and transforms data into actionable insights. This role goes beyond reporting by identifying trends, evaluating business impacts, and providing clear, data-driven recommendations that support strategic decision making across the organization. Over time, this role will grow toward advanced, AI-assisted data visualization and storytelling as we mature that capability in-house. We’re looking for someone who pairs analytical rigor with strong business judgment and a commitment to bringing top-quality work to the nonprofit social services sector.

Requirements

5+ years in data analysis, business intelligence, or a comparable role, with a track record of delivering insights that influenced real decisions.
Advanced SQL - PARTITION, geospatial, JSON-parsing, and performance tuning
Advanced BI and dashboarding proficiency in Tableau (LOD expressions, parameters, publishing) and/or Hex.
Experience working from a governed data warehouse—Redshift or comparable—and comfort with dbt / semantic-layer concepts (metric definitions, grain, data contracts).
Strong data-storytelling skills: framing exploratory vs. explanatory views, disciplined chart selection, annotation, and a clear “so what.”
Strong business acumen—able to connect analysis to organizational goals and surface practical, actionable recommendations.
Rigorous source-verification habits and attention to data accuracy.
Excellent written and verbal communication; able to work directly with executive and external stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

Hands-on experience applying AI to analytics work—e.g., using AI-assisted tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) or LLMs to accelerate SQL, analysis, or reporting—with sound judgment about verifying AI output. This is an emerging area; we value curiosity, practical exposure, and thoughtful, security-minded application
Custom and advanced data visualization beyond BI tools—component libraries (Recharts, shadcn/ui charts) or lower-level libraries (D3, Visx, Observable Plot)
Design craft for data: typography, color theory, layout, and accessibility (contrast, colorblind-safe palettes).
Narrative-web and interactive techniques such as scrollytelling, and live-refresh / connected dashboards.
Secure, PII-aware delivery to external audiences: access control, aggregation thresholds, and governance review.
Exposure to dashboards-as-code, semantic-layer tooling, or agentic / multi-step data-to-report pipelines (e.g., with MCP).
Prior work in health, social services, public-sector, or nonprofit domains

Responsibilities

Partner with program, operations, and leadership stakeholders to translate business questions into analyses that drive decisions.
Work with leadership and program managers to draft and maintain data reports and analytics for external publication/distribution.
Write advanced SQL to explore, transform, and validate data on top of the governed dbt + Redshift warehouse and its semantic layer.
Build and maintain trusted, refreshable reports and dashboards in Tableau and Hex
Turn dashboards into narratives that a non-technical audience can understand and act on.
Deliver actionable insights and clear recommendations for executive, funder, and government audiences.
Own analysis accuracy: reconcile every metric against its warehouse / semantic-layer source and maintain a reusable verification/QA checklist before anything is shared.
Define and maintain reporting standards and a lightweight, brand-aligned visual style: consistent metric definitions, disciplined chart selection, and clear labeling.
Support secure, PII-aware delivery of reports to both internal and external audiences.
Apply advanced SQL techniques (PARTITION, LOD-style logic) to solve complex, multi-dimensional analytical problems for stakeholders.
As the capability matures, contribute to advanced, AI-assisted data storytelling and custom visualization—a growth path for this role.
