About The Position

The Senior Custodian is responsible for overseeing and supervising all custodial operations within a school facility. This role involves managing custodial personnel, ensuring the preservation of property values, protecting the health and safety of occupants, supporting educational objectives, and maintaining the cleanliness and neatness of the facility and its grounds. The Senior Custodian also plays a key role in budget recommendations, supply management, and minor repair work.

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform duties and to direct others in performing similar duties.
  • Must be able to supervise and instruct custodial personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, cement work, electrical work, and maintenance of equipment is preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all workers engaged in custodial operations in the school facility.
  • Make recommendations and evaluations concerning the hiring, workload, assignment, effectiveness, transfer, and dismissal of custodial personnel.
  • Ensure the preservation of property values, protection of health and safety of occupants, support of educational objectives, and provision of a climate for learning.
  • Oversee the appearance of the grounds of the facility.
  • Orient and instruct custodial personnel.
  • Submit an inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Recommend an annual budget for custodial supplies and equipment to the principal.
  • Submit custodial vacation schedules to the principal.
  • Assign custodians to summer work and events at school with the approval of the principal.
  • Receive all incoming supplies and supervise disbursement of supplies within the building.
  • Maintain custodial work schedule and working hours as established by administration.
  • Maintain a checklist of facilities and inform the principal of safety and health impediments.
  • Submit both a verbal and written report of vandalism.
  • In absence of the principal, report vandalism to the Haverhill Police Department and Central Office.
  • Check school when called by Police or School Security to do so on off-hours and submit a written report.
  • Designate alternate to be contacted in absence.
  • Complete minor repair work that does not require a licensed person.
  • Report other repairs and emergency repairs to the Director of Maintenance with a follow-up written report to the principal.
  • Perform all other general duties as indicated by directives of the principal, Executive Director of Business, Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Haverhill School Committee.
