About The Position

The Senior Custodian is responsible for overseeing and supervising all custodial operations within a school facility. This role involves managing custodial personnel, ensuring the preservation of property, protecting the health and safety of occupants, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment conducive to learning. The Senior Custodian is also responsible for the appearance of the school grounds and performing minor repairs. Key duties include orienting and instructing staff, managing supply inventories, recommending budgets, scheduling vacations and summer work, receiving and disbursing supplies, maintaining work schedules, identifying and reporting safety and health issues, and responding to vandalism. The Senior Custodian acts as the immediate supervisor for all custodial staff and collaborates with school administration and external authorities when necessary.

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform duties and direct others in performing similar duties.
  • Must be able to supervise and instruct custodial personnel.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, cement work, electrical work, and maintenance of equipment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all workers engaged in custodial operations in the school facility.
  • Make recommendations and evaluations concerning hiring, workload, assignment, effectiveness, transfer, and dismissal of custodial personnel.
  • Ensure the preservation of property values.
  • Protect the health and safety of occupants.
  • Support educational objectives and provide a climate for learning.
  • Maintain cleanliness and neatness of the facility.
  • Oversee the appearance of the school grounds.
  • Orient and instruct custodial personnel.
  • Submit an inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Recommend an annual budget for custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Submit custodial vacation schedules.
  • Assign custodians to summer work and events.
  • Receive all incoming supplies and supervise disbursement.
  • Maintain custodial work schedule and working hours.
  • Maintain a checklist of facilities and inform principal of safety and health impediments.
  • Submit verbal and written reports of vandalism.
  • Report vandalism to the Haverhill Police Department and Central Office in the absence of the principal.
  • Check school when called by Police or School Security on off-hours and submit a written report.
  • Designate an alternate to be contacted in absence.
  • Complete minor repair work that does not require a licensed person.
  • Report other repairs and emergency repairs to the Director of Maintenance with a follow-up report to the principal.
  • Perform other general duties as directed by the principal, Executive Director of Business, Superintendent of Schools, or their designee.
