About The Position

Circle K is seeking an experienced Senior Litigation Counsel to join the U.S. Legal Team, reporting to the Director of Litigation – Global. This role will play a critical part in defending and evaluating personal injury and general liability claims, overseeing ADA Title III matters, and managing a broad portfolio of U.S. litigation. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment, brings strong litigation and claims judgment, and enjoys close partnership with Risk Management, Operations, Facilities, Environmental, and Finance teams. This role will play a critical part in defending and evaluating general liability claims, overseeing ADA Title III matters, and managing a broad portfolio of U.S. corporate litigation.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; in good standing.
  • 3 - 7 years of litigation experience, preferably including personal injury or general liability defense, within an insurance defense firm or in‑house legal environment.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and litigation matters from intake through resolution.
  • Strong judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed organization and influence outcomes without direct authority.
  • Excellent communication, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated integrity, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience evaluating and defending personal injury claims in a high‑volume or enterprise setting.
  • Experience handling ADA Title III matters.
  • In‑house litigation or insurance claims experience.
  • Familiarity with environmental, premises liability, or regulatory‑related litigation.
  • Experience with Relativity or other eDiscovery platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the defense, evaluation, and resolution of personal injury and general liability claims, including early case assessment, liability analysis, exposure evaluation, and settlement strategy.
  • Partner closely with Risk Management, insurance stakeholders, and business teams to assess factual liability, damages, litigation risk, and resolution pathways.
  • Manage outside defense counsel on personal injury matters, including case strategy, budgets, reserves, reporting, and performance oversight.
  • Review incident reports, conduct interviews, analyze medical records and damages, and support informed litigation and settlement decisions.
  • Independently manage a portfolio of U.S. corporate litigation matters from pre‑litigation through resolution.
  • Support the Director of Litigation – Global on complex, high‑risk, or material litigation matters.
  • Oversee and coordinate outside panel counsel to ensure effective, cost‑conscious representation aligned with business objectives.
  • Summarize litigation risks, matter status, and outcomes for legal leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Manage intake and oversight of ADA Title III matters, including indemnification analysis and coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Work with Facilities, Operations, and Risk teams to coordinate site inspections, remediation efforts, and settlement compliance.
  • Liaise with outside counsel to negotiate settlement agreements and monitor remediation and compliance deadlines.
  • Collaborate with Environmental, Facilities, Wholesale, Operations, and Risk teams to reduce litigation exposure and support proactive risk mitigation.
  • Support environmental disputes, access agreements, site closures, and remediation‑related litigation efforts.
  • Assist in developing and delivering training or guidance related to litigation risk, claims trends, and compliance best practices.
  • Support discovery obligations, subpoenas, investigations, and pre‑litigation matters.
  • Work closely with litigation support and e‑discovery teams; experience with Relativity or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Draft affidavits, correspondence, settlement documents, and internal summaries as needed.
  • Maintain accurate matter tracking, reporting, and documentation.
  • Partner with Wholesale, Accounting, and Risk Management teams to identify assets for recovery.
  • Draft demand letters and settlement documentation, including releases, notes, and letter agreements.
  • Participate in collectability analysis and ongoing matter tracking with outside counsel.
  • Monitor settlement payments, enforce agreements, and provide updates for internal reporting.
