About The Position

Angott Search Group is pleased to partner with a Michigan-based CUSO in the search for a Senior Counsel. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced attorney to serve as a key legal advisor to executive leadership while managing the organization’s legal function and supporting complex commercial transactions. The Senior Counsel will provide strategic legal guidance, oversee legal risk management, manage outside counsel relationships, and support business initiatives across the organization.

Requirements

Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
Admission to the bar required.
5+ years of experience in a law firm environment or comparable in-house legal role.
Strong knowledge of corporate law, contract law, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
Experience drafting and reviewing commercial lending documentation.
Ability to align legal strategies with organizational goals and business objectives.
Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated leadership ability with the ability to manage legal resources and outside counsel.
High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to ethical conduct.

Nice To Haves

Experience within a credit union, CUSO, bank, or other financial services organization.
Knowledge of regulations affecting credit unions, CUSOs, and commercial and consumer banking activities.
Experience working with regulators, auditors, and examiners.

Responsibilities

Provide strategic legal counsel and guidance to executive leadership on business initiatives, policies, procedures, and organizational matters.
Manage the company’s legal function, including internal resources and external legal partners.
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
Partner with loan documentation teams to provide legal guidance and prepare documentation for complex commercial lending transactions.
Advise on major business transactions, including acquisitions, partnerships, and strategic initiatives.
Identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks facing the organization.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry requirements.
Manage relationships with outside counsel, including selection, oversight, and performance evaluation.
Provide guidance on litigation matters, dispute resolution, and legal strategy.
Stay current on legislative and regulatory developments impacting the organization.
Partner with leadership on risk management initiatives.
Oversee aspects of the construction loan process, including legal review and team support.
Supervise and delegate work to legal professionals and support staff as applicable.
