About The Position

As Senior Employment Counsel, you will provide pragmatic day-to-day employment law advice in order to unblock business needs, mitigate risk, and incorporate best employment compliance practices throughout the company. You’ll play a critical role in building and upholding Nuro’s culture and helping prepare Nuro for the challenges and opportunities of launching a commercial product. This role will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer and serve as a key partner to the People team and business leaders, providing the legal, strategic, and operational framework to support an expanding global workforce.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of combined law firm and in-house experience focused on employment law.
  • Extensive experience in California.
  • Experience scaling a fast-growing company nationally and internationally is a plus.
  • Experience at private and public companies is a plus.
  • Proven combination of great legal instincts and business acumen.
  • Comfortable making the big calls regarding legal risk.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments, expertly juggling multiple tasks.
  • Experience in spaces where law and regulation is ambiguous, unarticulated, or entirely absent.
  • Ability to identify not just requirements for compliance, but opportunities to lead and define best practices.
  • Expertise in helping other team leaders deliver on their priorities through a practical approach to providing legal advice.
  • Fast and precise writer, comfortable taking first pen on documents in a range of legal and compliance contexts.
  • Able to tailor writing to audiences and quickly produce polished written product.
  • Technically proficient and comfortable working with modern tools like AI.
  • Member of the California Bar.
  • Admission in other jurisdictions is also a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide pragmatic day-to-day employment law advice to unblock business needs, mitigate risk, and incorporate best employment compliance practices.
  • Serve as a key partner to the People team and business leaders, providing legal, strategic, and operational framework for an expanding global workforce.
  • Advise on best practices and risk mitigation for the entire employee life-cycle (from recruiting to separation).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure employment policies, practices, and programs are legally sound and best in class.
  • Maintain employment templates, policies, and training.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employment pre-litigation and litigation matters, including agency charges, discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, settlement negotiations, and trial/arbitration strategies.
  • Supervise and direct outside counsel support as necessary.
  • Partner closely with the People and Operations team to assist in the scaling of Nuro’s non-exempt workforce, including wage and hour compliance, drug testing regulations, and terminations.
  • Own the employment legal and operation strategy for international growth and mobility issues, including to the EU, Asia, and Canada.
  • Partner closely on internal investigations and employee relations matters, including processes, policies, and recommendations.
  • Support and advise on a wide variety of cross-functional areas, including leaves of absences and accommodations, performance management, contingent workers, compensation, privacy, immigration, and export control compliance.
