Senior Cost Accountant

Hydropoint Data SystemsPetaluma, CA

About The Position

HydroPoint, a smart irrigation company, is seeking a senior cost accountant to own price, cost, and margin integrity across its hardware, subscription, and service categories. This role is crucial during a period of heightened financial scrutiny, requiring strengthened rigor in cost and margin reporting. It's a hands-on, high-ownership position for an individual who will deeply analyze numbers, identify variances and anomalies, and drive the necessary control, policy, and process changes to ensure alignment with expectations. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role offers significant visibility and has the potential to transition into a permanent position.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of progressive cost/manufacturing accounting experience, including a senior or lead role.
  • Bachelor's in Accounting or Finance.
  • Deep standard and actual costing in a manufacturing + inventory environment.
  • Command of BOMs, routings, PPV, absorption, and inventory valuation (ASC 330).
  • Experience spanning hardware, subscription/SaaS, and services revenue and cost.
  • Proven ability to develop and justify allocation methodologies for shared and indirect costs.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP, including revenue recognition (ASC 606), inventory (ASC 330), and software cost capitalization (ASC 350-40, 985-20).
  • Experience with NetSuite (ideally ARM/Revenue Cloud) and a manufacturing/inventory ERP (e.g., MISys or comparable).
  • Advanced Excel modeling skills.
  • Demonstrated variance, margin, and anomaly analysis, with a history of translating findings into control, policy, and process change.
  • Ability to take ownership, thoroughly investigate numbers, and remain effective with ambiguous data.
  • A strong controls mindset with an instinct for process and policy gaps and the judgment to close them.
  • Credible communication skills to defend analysis to stakeholders.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-scrutiny environment and deliver to deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA, CMA, or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a diligence, audit, quality-of-earnings, or transaction-readiness environment.
  • Experience with SaaS/IoT unit economics (ARR, churn, CAC/LTV, cost-to-serve).
  • ERP migration or chart-of-accounts/SKU taxonomy redesign experience.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze price, cost, and margin performance across hardware, subscription, and service categories.
  • Build and maintain margin decomposition by product line and revenue type.
  • Identify variances and anomalies against budget, forecast, standard cost, and prior periods, determining root cause and quantifying P&L impact.
  • Recommend and assist in implementing improvements to controls, policies, and processes to mitigate, correct, and prevent unfavorable outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain standard costs, BOMs, and inventory valuation for hardware; investigate absorption, purchase price variance, and capitalized variances, and reconcile to the GL.
  • Design, document, and defend appropriate allocation methods for shared and indirect costs across product lines and revenue categories.
  • Monitor SaaS unit economics, including ASPs, renewal and discount impact, deferred revenue, and services cost-to-serve, flagging margin erosion early.
  • Collaborate with FP&A, revenue accounting, operations, and sales to pressure-test assumptions and improve forecast accuracy.
  • Produce clear analysis and recommendations for the CFO and leadership, suitable for audit and third-party diligence.
