About The Position

This opportunity involves collaborating closely with colleagues and organizational leaders throughout CIRO, providing timely and practical legal advice on complex matters as they emerge. The role requires helping teams to move work forward with clear practical legal guidance and supporting CIRO’s oversight relationship with members of the Canadian Securities Administrators to ensure CIRO meets its applicable obligations. Responsibilities also include performing legal review of material contracts and internal corporate policies, leading or assisting in policy initiatives within the General Counsel's Office’s mandate, and retaining and instructing external counsel in corporate/commercial matters. The Senior Corporate Counsel will also provide legal advice and support relating to CIRO regulatory and legal obligations, as well as for CIRO’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and related corporate governance matters.

Requirements

  • Law degree and membership in good standing with the applicable provincial law society
  • At least 7 years’ experience in private practice, in-house or a regulatory position
  • Experience in corporate commercial law, securities law and/or self-regulation in the securities industry is especially valuable
  • A collaborative, team-oriented mindset and the ability to build strong working relationships across functions

  • Knowledge of and experience with current securities industry practices, applicable securities legislation, and/or marketplace structure and operations
  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills

  • Ability to interact effectively with senior management, other regulators and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on long-term, complex projects
  • Bilingual in English and French

  • Provide legal advice and support relating to CIRO regulatory and legal obligations
  • Provide legal advice and support for CIRO’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and related corporate governance matters
