Senior Core Infrastructure Engineer

Oracle•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

The Senior Core Infrastructure Engineer owns feature delivery across systems and infrastructure software, turning defined objectives into detailed designs, maintainable code, tests, and integrated features. The role develops efficient data paths involving packet forwarding, encapsulation, virtual networking, policy, or storage integration, and evaluates correctness and resource use under representative traffic conditions. The engineer makes implementation decisions within the component architecture, including choices involving data structures, synchronization, and memory management, and explains design tradeoffs during reviews. They use benchmarks, packet captures, and profiling tools to diagnose throughput, latency, CPU, and memory issues, and demonstrate improvements with repeatable measurements. The position also involves understanding the basic storage I/O path and investigating the effects of network behavior on storage latency and throughput with networking and storage partners. The role emphasizes production readiness through instrumentation, error-path and recovery testing, release validation, and diagnosis and resolution of issues during integration and production support. The engineer reviews code, documents interfaces and debugging findings, assists teammates, proposes architectural changes when needed, and responsibly reviews and validates AI-generated outputs used in engineering work. Success means delivering reliable features with detailed designs, meaningful tests, and measured performance; becoming a dependable owner of assigned components; resolving issues systematically; and contributing improvements to team practices. The role offers ownership, collaboration with experienced technical partners, and opportunities to develop expertise in networking, storage, and hardware acceleration.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software engineering experience in systems or infrastructure software, including hands-on networking data plane development.
  • Strong C or C++ skills, including debugging, memory management, and concurrent programming on Linux.
  • Working knowledge of packet processing and networking fundamentals, including Ethernet, IP, TCP/UDP, routing, and switching.
  • Experience implementing or debugging networking software such as forwarding, encapsulation, virtual switching, or network policy.
  • Familiarity with the basic storage I/O path, latency, throughput, and failure handling, and ability to investigate issues with storage partners.
  • Experience with automated testing, debugging or profiling tools, and using measurements to explain software behavior.
  • Ability to independently deliver defined features, make detailed design decisions, and identify issues requiring broader architectural input.
  • Clear technical communication and constructive collaboration in design discussions, code reviews, and integration work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DPDK or another user-space packet processing framework, traffic generators, packet captures, or network benchmarks.
  • Exposure to DPUs, SmartNICs, AMD Pensando, NVIDIA BlueField/DOCA, P4, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience with storage software, block storage, NVMe, NVMe over Fabrics, RDMA, or storage virtualization.
  • Experience with PCIe, DMA, SR-IOV, zero-copy techniques, hardware offload, load testing, or failure recovery testing.

Responsibilities

  • Turn defined objectives into detailed designs, maintainable code, tests, and integrated features.
  • Identify dependencies and communicate progress and risks early.
  • Implement packet forwarding, encapsulation, virtual networking, policy, or storage integration features.
  • Evaluate correctness and resource usage under representative traffic conditions.
  • Choose data structures, synchronization, and memory-management approaches within the component architecture, and explain tradeoffs in design and code reviews.
  • Use benchmarks, packet captures, and profiling tools to diagnose throughput, latency, CPU, and memory issues; demonstrate improvements with repeatable measurements.
  • Understand the basic storage I/O path and investigate how network behavior affects latency and throughput with networking and storage partners.
  • Add useful instrumentation, test error paths and recovery, and contribute to release validation.
  • Diagnose and fix issues in owned features during integration and production support.
  • Review code, document interfaces and debugging findings, and help teammates solve problems.
  • Raise proposals when local improvements require architectural changes.
  • Review and validate AI outputs used in coding, testing, debugging, and documentation; remain accountable for correctness and share uses that reduce repetitive work.
  • Deliver reliable features with detailed designs, meaningful tests, and measured performance; take dependable ownership of components and contribute improvements to team practices.
