About The Position

We continue to be a strong, positive force, pioneering the way education is delivered to all students. The Senior Controller will oversee organization and client school accounting services, activity, processes, and operations. This position will provide financial direction and comprehensive financial input and updates to senior leaders by evaluating, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting accounting and financial data points. This position reports to the Vice President, Finance or designee.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Organization’s culture, business units, services, and products.
  • Strong knowledge, understanding and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), cost accounting standards (CAS), Non-Profit Integrity Act of 2004 (SB 1262) and The Uniform Guidance (2 CFR § 200).
  • Knowledge of SEC regulations and provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
  • Knowledge of public-school finance, including school district accounting, budgeting, and revenue calculation.
  • Knowledge of State Education and Revenue, and other statutes, codes, rules, and regulations pertaining to school finance and revenue calculation.
  • Strong knowledge of data analysis and forecasting methods.
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking, use logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to analyze business and financial data or information: identify the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data.
  • Ability to make decisions, solve systems, and process problems, analyze financial information, and evaluate results to choose the best solution.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple requests or interruptions while still completing projects or work assignments in a timely manner.
  • Self-sufficient and focused on excellent customer service.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent field is required.
  • 5 years of professional experience in accounting and finance is required.
  • 3 years combination experience in leadership and management supporting Chief Level executives.
  • In-depth knowledge of financial analysis and reporting.
  • Strong autonomy, reliable, responsible, dependable and willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges.
  • Intermediate/Advanced level of skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other technology applications.
  • Proficient level of skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to travel up to 5% in performance of job duties is required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the California School Accounting Manual highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of the Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) Charter School Accounting and Best Practices Manual highly desired.
  • Familiarity with California Standardized Account Code Structure software and/or alternative forms.
  • Familiar with California Department of Education Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT)/Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) calculator.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with VP of Finance and CFO to establish financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on biweekly, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, adhering to national and local legal standards while remaining knowledgeable of current and proposed legislation.
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses of the Organization’s finances and presents findings to executive leadership for decision making and planning.
  • Develop and execute strategies and standards related to accounting policy, financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, budgeting and financial systems and controls.
  • Develop annual budget and forecasting, preparing reliable financial and management statements and reports for external and internal stakeholders; provides budgeting advice and guidance to senior leadership and client schools.
  • Ensure quality of financial transactions and reporting, tax planning and accuracy in all the financial activities.
  • Design and implement systems to manage and control cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, profit and loss, and other items pertinent to the operation of the client schools.
  • Prepare and document details of financial and business transactions to subsidiary accounts.
  • Supervise the management and performance of bank reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, petty cash, maintain record for all balance sheet accounts, client vendor accounts, AP records, payment, and transactions for multiple entities.
  • Direct the preparation, coordination and successful execution of all finance and accounting-related audits.
  • Keeps current on State Department of Education financial regulations, trends, and best practices in the non-profit financial and accounting environment.
  • Provide support to external auditors and provide needed information for the annual audit.
  • Perform administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. These may be changed or modified from time to time.
  • Lead, manage, coordinate, supervise, coach, and direct the hiring, training, timely performance evaluations of team members, oversee their daily activities and oversee the daily workflow of the department.
