About The Position

Carnegie Corporation of New York — a leader in philanthropy since 1911 — is seeking a Senior Content Editor and Writer with exceptional editorial judgment, superb writing and researching skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the consistent ability to manage assignments end-to-end and deliver them on time. Reporting to the Principal Director, Content and Dissemination within the Communications department, the role requires a creative, diligent, and collaborative editorial professional and content strategist who is invested in the success of the organization and committed to the foundation’s grantmaking goals in the areas of education, democracy, and international peace. The ideal candidate excels at working with internal and external stakeholders in a collegial fashion to produce multimedia content that is clear, compelling, accurate, and free of jargon. This senior manager role requires a person who can show care and tact while helping to improve the editorial skills of team members, including a direct report, while working in a close-knit office setting. A collaborative mindset and the ability to work across a range of creative styles and team dynamics are essential.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of editorial and digital experience for a high-impact newsroom, digital outlet, philanthropic foundation/nonprofit, or agency.
  • Exceptional researching, reporting, writing, and editing skills with a mastery of the Chicago Manual of Style; ability to deliver clean copy that requires minimal intervention.
  • Proven track record in executing content strategies that balance digital impact with long-term brand narrative and strategy.
  • Deep knowledge of SEO best practices, digital publishing platforms, and the ethical application of AI tools in editorial workflows.
  • Knowledge and interest in the foundation’s program areas.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, and time management in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • A commitment to ethical standards, transparency, and accountability.

Nice To Haves

  • Print magazine experience is preferred.
  • Experience managing one or more direct reports in an office setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, research, report, and write high-quality deliverables, including digital features, long-form Carnegie Reporter articles, legacy stories, thought leadership pieces, institutional messaging, newsletters, social posts, and board materials.
  • Provide editorial leadership on key projects, including concept development, research, production oversight, and stakeholder approval.
  • Serve as editorial lead in producing the foundation’s annual report and Carnegie Reporter print magazine.
  • In support of defined priorities, execute content strategy through the development of templated digital and print content types and oversee regular publishing cadence.
  • Identify opportunities for storytelling tied to grantmaking and brainstorm tactics for audience engagement and dissemination.
  • Translate complex information and research into multimedia content that engages grantees, grantmaking sectors, and the broader public.
  • Collaborate with the team to use creative storytelling tools and techniques to engage a range of audiences through media and social media platforms.
  • Working with the content manager, oversee the editorial calendar and production lifecycle to ensure all content meets rigorous copy editing and fact-checking protocols and deadlines.
  • Manage internal and external contributors, maintaining high editorial standards and consistent brand voice, language, and tone.
  • Ensure all content is accurate, consistent, and aligns with the foundation’s positioning and key messages.
  • Oversee production of the foundation’s annual report and other institutional materials as assigned, conducting the research required.
  • Manage review and approval processes in coordination with the Content Manager.
  • Source and develop a stable of freelance writers, editors, and vendors.
  • All other duties as assigned
