The Consumer Underwriter position involves reviewing, analyzing, and underwriting consumer, credit card, mortgage residential, and construction loan applications according to company guidelines, business and credit standards, and applicable laws and regulations. The role requires evaluating borrower credit-worthiness by reviewing income, assets, credit documentation, credit reports, salary, employment history, debt ratios, and loan-to-value information. The position may also involve evaluating property value, recommending loan terms, gathering necessary information for sound decisions, and responding to affiliate banks and personnel regarding lending decisions. Additionally, the role requires staying updated on relevant federal and state laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Requires an associates degree and some experience with consumer or mortgage associated lending, credit reports and documentation or other directly related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may meet qualification.
  • Basic knowledge of consumer/mortgage credit, credit reports, lending and underwriting concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to review and analysis income, assets, credit documentation, credit reports, debt ratios and loan to value information.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations relating to consumer lending.
  • Ability to make sound decisions.
  • Must have good customer relations and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to underwrite a high volume of loan applications maintaining accuracy and consistency.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential material in a professional manner.
  • Working knowledge of a various related software applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in reviewing, analyzing, underwriting within system, evaluating and providing recommendations for approving or denying consumer, credit card, mortgage residential and construction loan applications according to the company's guidelines, business and credit standards as well as applicable laws and regulations.
  • Review documents and forms within system.
  • Assist Underwriting to review and analyze income, assets, credit documentation, credit reports, salary and employment history, debt ratios and loan to value information to determine a borrower's credit-worthiness.
  • May also evaluate the value of the subject property.
  • May recommend terms of loan for underwriter review.
  • Gather information as necessary to make sound decisions.
  • Respond to affiliate banks, loan center and branch personnel on lending decisions and issues.
  • May recommend exceptions based on findings.
  • Recommend applications for risk review by elevating concerns to an underwriter and by following policies and procedures.
  • Keep abreast of federal and state laws and regulations relating to consumer lending.
  • Other duties as assigned.
