About The Position

HATCH is seeking a highly motivated Senior Rail Vehicle Mechanical Engineer to join their North American Infrastructure Practice in their Boston, MA office. The role requires broad-based knowledge of rail vehicle mechanical engineering, with desired qualifications including experience in fleet inspections, general maintenance shop practices, and equipment installation in a rail or industrial environment. The candidate must demonstrate a high work ethic, ability to work independently or with limited instruction, interact well with customer staff in a field environment, and possess strong communication and organizational skills including team management, project management, multitasking, and meeting deadlines. PE registration is desirable but not required. Domestic and foreign travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering is desirable.
  • At least 20 years of relevant experience with commuter rail, freight rail or transit projects with a proven track record in railway engineering and project management.
  • Respect in the rail industry, with knowledge of the local market, and respected connections in the Transit Authority market.
  • Experience in managing the engineering aspect of projects.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams in a rail or transit project environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in conducting fleet inspections.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance shop practices and processes.
  • Experience with equipment installation in a rail or industrial environment.
  • PE registration.
  • Experience in rail operations, train planning, rail equipment maintenance facility design and track maintenance will be beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Provide project management and engineering support as required.
  • Provide direction and monitor the work of junior staff.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and help develop staff skills.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, delivering technically complex and cost-effective design solutions.
  • Perform hands-on engineering work within the light rail, subway, and commuter rail environment, including investigations of equipment malfunctions, modifications, and reporting findings.
  • Develop technical specifications for new and upgraded train equipment and systems.
  • Review design submittals and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings.
  • Participate in formal design review meetings and technical working sessions.
  • Inspect and review prototype and first article equipment and prepare detailed descriptions of review findings.
  • Prepare reports identifying work progress, defects/non-conformances, and areas of concern.
  • Witness electro-mechanical equipment undergoing qualification testing (shock and vibration, environmental, electrical, functional).
  • Participate in quality assurance and manufacturing audits.
  • Take direction from Program Management on time-sensitive and critical tasks.
  • Manage engineering changes, client relations, and safety of various projects to ensure quality, client satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Assist in pursuits, client relationship building efforts, and building technical excellence within the group.
