About The Position

Type One Energy is seeking a Senior Computational Physicist focused on boundary physics to lead advanced research and modeling for edge, scrape-off layer (SOL), and divertor physics in next-generation fusion energy systems. The role develops predictive capabilities for plasma boundary behavior, particle and heat exhaust, impurity transport, and plasma-material interactions to support stellarator design and operation. The successful candidate will bring computational plasma physics expertise and scientific leadership to guide boundary physics strategy, mentor researchers, and collaborate across physics, engineering, and experimental teams. The position is permanent and full-time, based in Knoxville, Tennessee; Madison, Wisconsin; or Vancouver, British Columbia, with a hybrid work policy. It reports to the Senior Director of Physics Analysis.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in plasma physics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in scrape-off layer (SOL), divertor, and boundary plasma physics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with stellarator edge physics and island divertor configurations.
  • Experience with edge plasma modeling tools such as EMC3-EIRENE, SOLPS-ITER, UEDGE, or comparable simulation frameworks.
  • Approximately 10 or more years of experience in fusion edge/divertor physics, numerical modeling, and scientific leadership, including experience leading collaborative research efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research and development in boundary plasma physics, contributing to divertor design and analysis of plasma, neutral, and impurity transport in the edge region.
  • Model and interpret stellarator edge and divertor physics using 3D plasma-neutral simulation tools such as EMC3-EIRENE, and develop reduced-order predictive SOL and divertor models.
  • Analyze core-edge coupling and its effects on plasma performance, particle exhaust, impurity control, and operational boundaries.
  • Contribute to plasma-material interaction modeling, including erosion, redeposition, material migration, and plasma-facing component lifetime assessments using ERO2.0, GITRm, or related tools.
  • Provide technical leadership to a small team through mentorship, project planning, and coordination of modeling and analysis activities.
  • Collaborate with engineering and experimental teams to develop operational scenarios and validation strategies for Infinity One.

Benefits

  • Yearly bonus
  • Hybrid work policy
  • Stock options
  • Relocation allowance
  • Insurance plans
  • Retirement options
  • Voluntary benefits
