About The Position

This position provides direct nursing services for adults and children in accordance with guidelines and protocols from the CDC, ACIP, DOH, and Sarasota County Health Department (CHD). The role involves providing routine and comprehensive immunizations, performing nursing assessments, utilizing the FL SHOTS immunization registry, educating clients and families, and serving as a subject matter expert on immunization updates. The nurse will also act as a check-in clerk for immunization clinics, perform data entry and clerical duties, scan and attach documents, retrieve and respond to phone calls and voicemails, make appointments, and perform support duties for clinics. Additionally, the position requires operating standard office equipment, accessing email regularly, providing clients with immunization records, educating on the importance of immunizations, and providing excellent customer service. The role also involves assisting with vaccine supply integrity, inventory management, daily vaccine counts, and maintaining proper vaccine storage.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a registered nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of Immunizations and basic schedule for children and adults
  • Skill in the use of computer equipment and software to enter, retrieve, and manipulate data required to perform work functions
  • Ability to administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermic injections in adults and children
  • Ability to interpret rules, and guidelines relating to immunizations
  • Ability to perform physical assessments and interpret laboratory results
  • Skill with administering and interpretation of Tuberculin skin test
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing service for adults and children, in accordance with the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP), Department of Health (DOH) and Sarasota County Health Department (CHD) guidelines, protocols and clinical service parameters.
  • Provides routine children’s and adult immunizations, as well as comprehensive travel vaccines and health counseling.
  • Performs nursing assessments, particularly of clients’ vaccination needs and immediate response to receiving immunizations, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Uses FL SHOTS immunization registry to verify clients’ immunization needs prior to discussing with client or drawing up vaccines.
  • Enters vaccines into FL SHOTS in real time.
  • Educates client and/or family members regarding immunizations, disease process and transmission. Provides appropriate literature, including most up to date Vaccine Information Statement (VIS).
  • Serves as subject matter expert, keeping abreast of all CDC immunization updates, schedules and ACIP recommendations. Educates clients accordingly, and also keeps co-workers apprised of updates, travel advisories, etc.
  • Provides superior customer service, keeping clients well informed about vaccines being given, potential side effects, etc., as well as when to return for additional doses.
  • Acts as check-in clerk for the Adult, Children’s and Travelers’ Immunizations clinic to which (s)he is assigned, according to FDOH Guidebook and DOH – Sarasota Immunizations Manual.
  • Accurately registers clients in FL SHOTS and the Health Management System (HMS) and activates the client records.
  • Verifies and updates the client’s address and telephone number at every check-in.
  • Screens each pediatric client upon intake to determine eligibility for Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program; prominently denotes correct program eligibility on screening form before giving it to nursing staff.
  • Performs a variety of data entry and clerical duties according to DOH policies and directives.
  • Scans and attaches clinical and billing documents to the client’s HMS account.
  • Searches electronic files, examines client records, and contacts other health care providers if necessary to determine immunization status.
  • Enters immunization data into FL SHOTS vaccine registry and completes with precision all immunization documentation.
  • Receives and screens phone calls, answering before the call goes to voicemail if possible. Provides callers with general information on immunizations, clinic schedules and services. Refers callers to other resources, including to nurses when appropriate.
  • Retrieves and responds to voicemail messages.
  • Make appointment reminder calls.
  • Make initial and return appointments for adults, travelers, and children, in person and on the phone.
  • Takes complete and accurate information from callers to facilitate nursing assessment of vaccine needs and to obtain insurance authorization if applicable.
  • Performs support duties for both regularly scheduled and outreach Immunizations Clinics according to the CHD Guidebook and the F DOH-Sarasota Immunizations Manual.
  • Operates and utilizes with accuracy a variety of standard business and office equipment including personal computers, copier, scanner and related equipment.
  • Accesses e-mail at least 2-3 times daily and is responsible for acting in accordance with information contained therein, particularly those e-mails from the agency administrator, division director, supervisor and/or DOH.
  • Provides parent/child with copy of immunization record and /or Immunization Certificate for daycare or school entry as needed.
  • Assists in the education of clients and family members about the importance of immunizations and adhering to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) schedules.
  • Provides outstanding customer service, going beyond what is required, with all clients, teammates and other co-workers, vendors, inter-agents, and the public at large.
  • Participates in community events and other community outreach activities held or attended by DOH- Sarasota as needed.
  • Acts to ensure the integrity and quality of the vaccine supply and assists with maintaining the inventory.
  • Assists with daily vaccine counts, to maintain vaccine accountability excellence.
  • Assists with recording and uploading data logger temps.
  • Assists with rotating vaccine inventory and ensuring that stock is properly stored.
