About The Position

PavCo is the owner and operator of two of Canada’s premier venues for events, BC Place Stadium and the Vancouver Convention Centre. BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo) is hiring a Senior Communications Manager to cover a 14-month maternity leave. In this role, your focus will be on leading the communications strategy for our beautiful and sustainable Vancouver Convention Centre. The Senior Communications Manager will play a critical role in developing and executing our communications strategy for the Vancouver Convention Centre, as well as supporting the broader communications and marketing teams across PavCo, including working closely with the marketing team for the Convention Centre and the marketing and communications team at BC Place. In this role, you will use your strategic skills and innovation as you lead and enhance the communications function for one of the world’s most recognized facilities and leading economic generators. Creating and executing the communications strategy will include employee communications and engagement, media relations and issues management, social media support, community relations and special events support. You will bring a passion for events and play an important role in enhancing the well-established profile and reputation of the Vancouver Convention Centre with a wide variety of community, industry and government stakeholders, and local and international trade media, while creating communications opportunities through various channels and resources to boost the facility’s image with clients and key stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Completion of a university degree in marketing, communications, media relations, or a related area of study, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Seven to ten years of experience in a crown corporation or relevant communications experience in a corporate environment.
  • Media relations experience required.
  • Advanced writing skills that can capture the voice of the organization.
  • Able to respond quickly to issues with strategic advice and key messaging.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritize conflicting requirements in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of software applications including Microsoft Office, internet communications and social media platforms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while also working independently.
  • High degree of resiliency and motivated by challenging situations.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet tight timelines and to respond to pressing issues.

  • Experience in events, conventions or hospitality industries is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and execute a strategic communications plan for the Vancouver Convention Centre that considers internal and external communications, including employee and community engagement, media relations and issues management.
  • Manage and mentor the Vancouver Convention Centre’s Communications Specialist role.
  • Drive employee communications for the Vancouver Convention Centre by working closely with departmental partners to ensure our team members receive clear and regular updates and information.
  • Work with the leadership team to identify, monitor and respond to issues at the Vancouver Convention Centre, helping to mitigate and resolve them, along with overseeing the facility’s crisis communications plan.
  • Manage the Vancouver Convention Centre media activities, including acting as the centre’s media liaison, providing guidance on media responses and preparing spokespeople as required.
  • Support the Vancouver Convention Centre’s marketing and social media strategies to drive engagement with audiences and to enhance the centre’s reputation as a global thought-leader.
  • Deliver writing and editorial services to support sales and marketing initiatives, including the website, business proposals, advertising and other marketing materials as required.
  • Promote and support the Vancouver Convention Centre’s events, community and industry activities.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to execute joint communications initiatives.
  • Support PavCo’s central communications function, as required, including the preparation of media messaging and reporting, issues and briefing notes, government and employee communications, and annual submissions including Service Plans and Annual Reports.
