About The Position

Universal Shield Insurance Group is seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to join their Commercial Property & Casualty department. This role is based in Dublin, Ohio, or Scottsdale, AZ, with a hybrid work arrangement. Universal Shield Insurance Group is a hybrid property and casualty insurer and insurtech focused on providing innovative insurance solutions to underserved markets for small businesses, offering coverage on both an admitted and surplus lines basis. The company utilizes online agency portals, B2C, and B2B websites to deliver intuitive and device-agnostic products, accelerating underwriting decisions for partners and customers. This position offers an opportunity to join an established company led by experienced professionals.

Requirements

  • At least five years of Commercial P&C underwriting insurance experience is required (experience with Commercial Property, General Liability, Inland Marine, BOP/CPP preferred).
  • Achievement of CPCU, CIC, or other applicable designations with a willingness to complete additional credentials and continuing education.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts - strong customer service focus.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Detail-oriented and able to handle multiple tasks on time.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a renewal book of approximately $7M-$8M and generate new business of approximately $1.5M annually.
  • Analyze diverse information on new and renewal business to accept, price, modify, or reject business within delegated authority level for both Admitted and Surplus Lines Products.
  • Review market conditions to determine whether new coverage should be offered or existing coverage should be scaled back or discontinued.
  • Apply forms, endorsements, and deductibles to help mitigate risk.
  • Prepare written reports and lead meetings detailing/discussing coverage decisions, including supporting documentation.
  • Develop strong business relationships with key wholesalers and agents and provide underwriting guidance to producers.
  • Identify account rounding opportunities to increase product footprint with wholesalers and customers.
  • Collaborate with other underwriters, marketing, claims, operations, and management colleagues to manage and implement effective rate and pricing strategies for profitable results, book portfolio growth, and enhanced producer relations.
  • Identify opportunities for growth within existing and new business sources.
  • Market insurance products and utilize rating/pricing strategies to achieve profitable growth.
  • Maintain a profitable book of business within assigned levels of authority using sound underwriting judgment and technical skills.
  • Continue personal industry skills and knowledge development to meet company goals of quality and timeliness.
  • Maintain knowledge of current insurance market trends, conditions, competitive intelligence, compliance/regulatory issues, and product and service innovations.
  • Interact collaboratively and collegially with colleagues, agents, and customers in a professional manner.
