Senior Cloud Platform Engineer

Sonatus•Detroit, MI
•Onsite

About The Position

Sonatus is seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Platform Engineer to own the cloud infrastructure and delivery pipeline supporting a major OEM program. The role is based on-site at the customer’s engineering facility, embedded alongside the customer’s teams. The engineer will build and operate a Google Cloud Platform-based environment using GitOps and infrastructure as code, automate software delivery from commit to production, and serve as the on-site point of contact for cloud access, environment provisioning, and operational issues. The position is hands-on and calls for a broad, self-directed engineer who can work across organizational boundaries to unblock delivery. The engineer will oversee platform reliability, security, and cost; manage AI resources and model serving; improve observability and operational automation; and coordinate with Sonatus engineering teams in California, Ireland, Korea, and India. The base salary range is $137,000–$175,000 USD.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience building and operating production cloud infrastructure, with a strong DevOps, platform engineering, or SRE background.
  • Deep, hands-on Google Cloud Platform experience, including GKE, IAM, VPC/networking, and Cloud Build or equivalent; GCP depth is required.
  • Strong Terraform skills and a track record of managing real production infrastructure as code.
  • Practical experience with GitOps workflows and tooling such as Argo CD, Flux, or Helm, and a preference for declarative, version-controlled operations.
  • Solid Kubernetes and containerization experience, including deploying, scaling, securing, and debugging real workloads.
  • Strong automation and scripting ability in Python, Go, or Bash, with a bias toward eliminating manual steps.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or similar tools.
  • Ability to operate independently in a customer environment, with strong communication, sound judgment about escalation, and credibility working directly with a partner organization’s engineering and IT teams.
  • Experience with ML or AI workloads running on cloud infrastructure.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working embedded at, or delivering into, a large enterprise or automotive customer environment.
  • Familiarity with cloud cost management and FinOps practices.
  • Security and compliance experience in a regulated or enterprise setting.
  • Experience with AWS or Azure.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the program’s GCP platform, including GKE, IAM, Vertex, networking, and supporting services, with a focus on reliability, security, and cost.
  • Build and maintain Terraform infrastructure as code, ensuring environment configuration is reviewed, versioned, and reproducible.
  • Operate the platform using GitOps practices and tools such as Argo CD and Helm, keeping environment state declarative and changes traceable to commits.
  • Design and maintain CI/CD automation that takes services from commit to deployment with minimal manual intervention, including blue/green and canary rollouts.
  • Build observability and alerting that gives Sonatus and the customer visibility into system health, and lead troubleshooting when issues arise.
  • Serve as the on-site owner for cloud access and environment issues, coordinating permissions, provisioning, and workflow questions with the customer’s IT and platform teams.
  • Manage AI resources, including model access, GPU and accelerator capacity, quotas, and API keys across Vertex and other model services; track usage and spend.
  • Optimize AI model deployment and serving for latency, throughput, and cost through model selection, right-sizing, batching, caching, and quantization, and measure results against agreed benchmarks.
  • Automate recurring operational work to reduce toil and avoid dependence on manual intervention.
  • Partner with Sonatus engineering teams in California, Ireland, Korea, and India to keep the on-site environment aligned with the broader platform.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision health care plan.
  • Flexible and Dependent Care Expense program.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
