Senior Cloud FinOps Engineer

Magnet Forensics

About The Position

Magnet Forensics is seeking a Senior Cloud FinOps Engineer to join the Shared Services Engineering team. This role reports to the Director of the Shared Services group and is responsible for enabling cloud and AI cost visibility, forecasting, and optimization across AWS, Azure, and AI environments. The engineer will build tooling and processes to provide engineering and finance teams with the data needed for informed decision-making. This is an engineering-first role focused on analyzing, automating analyses, making engineering recommendations, and leveraging AI for efficiency. The role offers significant autonomy and influence over cloud investment management and optimization. Ideal candidates are motivated by turning complexity into clarity, enjoy building tooling to eliminate manual processes, and want their work to have direct business impact. The interview process will include technical elements covering cloud architecture, coding (scripting), and cloud cost analysis.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of industry experience with significant depth in cloud cost management, Financial Operations (FinOps), or cloud platform engineering with a strong cost focus.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cost and billing, including understanding AWS invoices, Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), and how tagging strategies affect cost allocation accuracy.
  • Experience with a FinOps platform (Finout, Apptio Cloudability, CloudHealth, or similar) beyond basic reporting, understanding virtual tagging, allocation rules, and achieving accurate per-product cost visibility from shared infrastructure.
  • Develops and executes a savings plan or reservation strategy: has analyzed usage, modeled commitment options, made a recommendation, and tracked the outcome.
  • Writes code or scripting to automate workflows (Python, Bash, or equivalent).
  • Leverages AI to responsibly accelerate analysis and tooling creation.
  • Communicates clearly across technical and financial audiences.
  • Brings a continuous improvement mindset: identifies toil, proposes fixes, and follows through, taking ownership with minimal direction.
  • Must be able to operate within approximately Eastern Time Zone hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Azure cost management.
  • Familiarity with AI cost concepts.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure concepts that affect costs and modelling.
  • Builds tooling that automates financial and/or analysis workflows — not just monitored or maintained dashboards someone else built.

Responsibilities

  • Own cloud cost visibility across AWS and Azure, including maintaining tagging hygiene, virtual cost allocation, and tooling (Finout and related) for accurate spend surfacing by product, team, and workload.
  • Identify, enable, and drive cost savings measures.
  • Automate workflows for routine activities such as bill reconciliation and payment.
  • Enhance and maintain budget forecasting capabilities for accurate monthly forecasts with low overhead.
  • Evolve unit economics frameworks by instrumenting the pipeline for product telemetry, routing it to cost allocation tooling, and producing dashboards showing cost-per-unit.
  • Make recommendations for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances across AWS services and track realized savings.
  • Monitor for cost anomalies and optimization opportunities, maintaining alerting and review cadences, and driving remediation with engineering teams.

Benefits

  • Generous time off policies
  • Competitive compensation
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Reward and recognition programs
  • Employee committees & resource groups
  • Healthcare and retirement benefits
