About The Position

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer Supervisor to serve as a Construction Field Inspector-In-Charge (IIC). This role involves overseeing major highway and bridge construction projects to ensure they meet high standards for safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness. The position offers an opportunity to lead meaningful projects that benefit the public and shape communities. This position oversees inspection and engineering activities on complex highway and bridge construction projects to ensure full compliance with required plans and standards. Responsibilities focus on coordinating work, guiding staff, and resolving technical issues as construction progresses. The role involves managing construction activities, providing engineering guidance, managing documentation, leading inspection staff, coordinating with stakeholders, and evaluating job progress, safety practices, and construction methods.

Requirements

  • Six years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty; and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists
  • Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty; and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; and an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Two years of professional civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Manage highway and bridge construction activities to ensure compliance with approved plans and standards
  • Provide evaluations and technical direction to resolve design issues and field challenges
  • Prepare and review reports, estimates, work orders, and material certifications
  • Direct the work of inspection staff and support their development and performance
  • Work with municipalities, contractors, utilities, and other partners to address project needs
  • Assess job progress, safety practices, and construction methods to maintain quality and safety
