About The Position

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking a part-time Senior Center Recreation Programmer at the Aurora Hills Community Center. This role involves managing the center's operations, including the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs for seniors aged 55 and older. The position supports the production of high-quality programs that meet community needs, contributing to a dynamic and enriching environment for participants. This position works 24 hours per week and does not supervise staff or contractors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Gerontology, Social Work, Therapeutic Recreation, Adult Education or a closely related Human Services field
  • Some experience managing recreation programs and activities in a senior adult or recreation setting
  • Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history.
  • Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record.
  • Must possess or obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, implementing, and supervising programs and activities tailored for the 55+ community
  • Directing senior adult activities and supervising event volunteers
  • Assessing the needs of prospective and enrolled participants, including identifying and cultivating participant leadership and empowerment through advisory councils
  • Managing budgets; tracking expenditures, monitoring supply inventories, ordering equipment, and coordinating necessary repairs
  • Providing advocacy, education, resource referrals, and consultation to staff and participants regarding available community services
  • Developing and distributing publicity materials, such as the 55+ Activities Guide, center newsletters, activity calendars, and promotional flyers
  • Ensuring compliance with County policies and procedures by maintaining accurate administrative records, including participant rosters and service agreements
  • Preparing facilities and setting up spaces for programs, events, and activities
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned
