As we continue to grow, we're looking for an experienced Senior BOP Underwriter to help us build and manage a profitable commercial insurance portfolio. We are looking for a highly experienced Business Owners Policy (BOP) Underwriter with a strong background in commercial lines and small business insurance. This is a senior-level role for an underwriting professional who can independently evaluate risks, make sound underwriting decisions, structure coverage, develop pricing, and manage a profitable book of business. The ideal candidate combines deep BOP underwriting expertise with strong analytical judgment, commercial awareness, and the ability to work effectively with agents and brokers. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to underwriting strategy and help shape processes in a technology-driven insurance environment.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience.
  • 7+ years of hands-on BOP underwriting experience.
  • Proven experience managing a profitable commercial book of business.
  • Strong background in small commercial insurance and/or middle-market risks.
  • Experience working directly with independent agents and wholesale brokers.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial property and liability coverages.
  • Excellent risk selection and underwriting judgment.
  • Strong analytical and financial assessment skills.
  • Ability to independently make and defend underwriting decisions.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPCU, AU, CIC, ARM, or another relevant insurance designation.

  • Experience mentoring junior underwriting professionals.
  • Experience working in a technology-enabled, digital, or data-driven insurance environment.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate BOP and small commercial submissions across a broad range of industries.
  • Analyze applications, loss runs, financial information, inspections, and supplemental underwriting documentation.
  • Assess property, general liability, business income, equipment breakdown, cyber, crime, and other commercial exposures.
  • Evaluate catastrophe exposures, including wind, hail, flood, wildfire, and earthquake.
  • Determine account eligibility based on underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and portfolio objectives.
  • Identify adverse selection, emerging risks, and trends that may impact profitability.
  • Develop appropriate pricing based on risk characteristics, loss experience, and market conditions.
  • Determine premiums, deductibles, limits, endorsements, and exclusions.
  • Review replacement cost valuations and business income calculations.
  • Apply sound underwriting judgment while balancing growth and profitability.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with agents and brokers.
  • Manage and maintain a profitable book of commercial business.
  • Monitor loss ratios, retention, growth, and agency performance.
  • Conduct renewal reviews and identify opportunities for account expansion.
  • Identify underperforming segments and recommend corrective actions.
  • Contribute to strategies that support profitable premium growth.
  • Build strong relationships with independent agents, brokers, and key producers.
  • Provide underwriting guidance and product expertise.
  • Help agents structure accounts appropriately and improve submission quality.
  • Participate in agency meetings and business planning discussions.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource for agency partners.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to junior underwriting professionals.
  • Contribute to underwriting strategy, product development, and portfolio initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes and decision-making.
  • Stay current on commercial insurance trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks.
  • Support quality assurance, compliance, and underwriting governance.
