Senior Backend Software Engineer

Flexcompute Inc.•Madison, WI
•Onsite

About The Position

Flexcompute is hiring a Senior Backend Software Engineer to design and implement scalable solutions for its advanced electromagnetic (EM) simulation platform. The role focuses on backend software development, data management, API unification, scripting improvements, and cloud integration. The engineer will collaborate with EM and infrastructure teams on simulation-specific solutions, including backend and scheduler integrations and Python front-end functionality. They will also improve task pipelines and develop and maintain hybrid cloud compute and storage solutions that connect on-premise HPC systems with cloud platforms. This is a senior, hands-on role on a deliberately small and senior team. The engineer will own platform components end to end with little direction and have direct access to the founders. The position is required to be performed on-site at Flexcompute’s Madison, Wisconsin office; it is not remote or hybrid. Flexcompute develops ultra-fast engineering simulation technology, including Flow360 for computational fluid dynamics and Tidy3D for electromagnetic simulation. The company describes an innovative, collaborative startup culture and offers competitive base salary plus RSUs, insurance, a 401(k) contribution, paid time off and holidays, a fitness stipend, company-paid trips to its Boston headquarters, learning sponsorship, and an AI tools budget.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience in at least one of Java, Python, or C++; deep expertise in one is sufficient.
  • Production cloud experience; AWS is preferred.
  • Experience operating distributed systems in production.
  • Direct ownership of a production backend service from design through deployment and operation.
  • Fluent professional English, spoken and written.
  • Ability to work on-site at the Madison, Wisconsin office.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with load balancing, autoscaling, and queues or streaming systems such as SQS, SNS, or Kafka.
  • Experience integrating cloud platforms with HPC environments or large compute clusters.
  • Familiarity with job schedulers or batch systems, distributed compute frameworks, or large-scale data pipelines.
  • Experience supporting scientific computing or simulation platforms.
  • Knowledge of GPU infrastructure and resource scheduling.
  • Experience building developer platforms or internal infrastructure tooling.
  • Degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field from a leading university; hands-on production experience is valued more than where the candidate studied.
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to new challenges, and innovate in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Exposure to Kubernetes and Docker, Terraform or Ansible, monitoring and observability tooling, Linux troubleshooting, networking and security practices, the simulation stack, or HPC.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to software development, including API unification, simulation data management such as caching, syncing, and storage, and scripting improvements.
  • Collaborate with EM and infrastructure teams to implement simulation-specific solutions, including backend and scheduler integration enhancements and Python front-end functionality.
  • Improve task pipelines by designing a web API for a multi-physical simulation context.
  • Develop and maintain hybrid cloud compute and storage solutions that integrate on-premise HPC systems with cloud platforms.
  • Optimize and manage high-performance computing clusters equipped with high-speed interconnects.
  • Own production backend platform components end to end, from design through deployment and operation.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary plus RSUs granted on day one and vesting over four years.
  • Medical, dental, and vision health insurance.
  • 401(k) contribution.
  • Flexible paid time off, all US national holidays, and a company-wide year-end break.
  • $1,200 annual fitness stipend.
  • Company-paid trips to the Boston headquarters to work with the core team.
  • Learning sponsorship and an AI tools budget, including payment for Claude, Cursor, and similar tools.
