About The Position

RealWork is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join its growing engineering team. The role involves maintaining a Fastify and MongoDB backend, working with ORMs, and designing REST/RPC APIs. The engineer will collaborate with stakeholders to refine scope, work with other engineers to maintain high accountability and quality, and own the full software development lifecycle on a per-project basis. The position emphasizes product development, data engineering, systems architecture, and B2B solutions. RealWork uses a high-throughput, AI-assisted, docs-as-code engineering framework. The company trains engineers to use this framework to deliver well-tested, well-documented features quickly, with engineers leading problem-solving and decision-making while AI agents assist with research and routine documentation, code, and test work. The platform helps home service businesses attract customers by showcasing field work through websites and website widgets. Its backend is primarily built with TypeScript and the MERN stack, with React frontends. The company emphasizes maintaining an evergreen codebase and balancing best practices, stability, and developer usability. The interview process takes less than four hours total.

Requirements

Strong coding experience.
Conversational fluency in AWS and cloud computing concepts.
Ability to teach SOLID and DRY principles and understand when to deviate from them.
Experience working in a test-driven development style.
Ability to explain the pros and cons of synchronous and asynchronous systems.
Demonstrable experience with data modeling, query and database-index optimization, and building REST/RPC APIs.
Professional experience building products with TypeScript, Node.js, and MongoDB.

Nice To Haves

Experience in CI/CD with Terraform.
Frontend experience with React or Preact.
Previous experience building products in a startup environment.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science.

Responsibilities

Help define and refine product requirements based on input from cross-functional stakeholders.
Translate behavioral and UX specifications into technical requirements and scopes, then lead a development team in executing them.
Maintain the Fastify and MongoDB backend, work with ORMs, and design REST/RPC APIs.
Own the full software development lifecycle on a per-project basis.
Work with other engineers to maintain a high accountability and quality bar.
Use test-driven development and apply appropriate refactoring strategies.
