About The Position

M-KOPA is hiring a permanent Senior Backend Engineer for its Asset Sales group to help scale a core part of its FinTech platform. The role involves building and operating distributed C# and .NET microservices on Azure and Kubernetes within an event-driven architecture that supports products at significant scale. The engineer will own services end to end—from design and implementation through deployment, production operation, and iteration—and contribute to systems that help customers across Africa access smartphones, e-motorbikes, and financing. This is an outcomes-driven, fully remote role working with distributed teams across the UK, Europe, and Africa, with collaboration during core GMT working hours. Engineers are expected to use production data to assess whether work is complete, take responsibility for the infrastructure and services they build, and participate in operating the systems, including on-call. M-KOPA encourages AI-native engineering, using AI tools throughout design, coding, testing, review, incident investigation, and technical communication, supported by automated tests, SLOs, alerting, observability, and deployment safeguards.

Requirements

  • Strong grasp of C# and .NET development.
  • Experience with event-driven systems and messaging technology such as Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with microservices architecture; Azure and Kubernetes experience is preferred within this qualification.
  • Experience using observability tools such as Grafana or Azure Application Insights to understand production behavior.
  • Comfort using AI tools as part of a daily engineering workflow, including design, code review, testing, and incident investigation.
  • A DevOps mindset, including on-call participation and production ownership.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in distributed teams across time zones.
  • Continuous learning mindset and openness to feedback.
  • Ability and willingness to own the entire software stack, including supporting infrastructure, throughout its lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operate distributed C# and .NET microservices hosted on Azure and Kubernetes.
  • Develop services within an event-driven architecture, accounting for idempotency, retries, out-of-order events, and failure modes.
  • Own services end to end, from design and implementation through deployment, production support, and iteration.
  • Use production data and observability tools to understand service behavior and improve reliability.
  • Help operate systems through on-call participation and use incidents to improve platform resilience.
  • Apply AI tools in engineering workflows, including design exploration, code generation and review, test writing, incident investigation, and technical communication.
  • Collaborate effectively with distributed teams across time zones and contribute to continuous improvement.
