About The Position

MarketTime is a growing B2B ecommerce SaaS company whose multi-tenant platform supports enterprise customers across multiple industries, processing sensitive financial data, including credit card payments, while maintaining PCI DSS compliance. Its cloud-native platform includes public APIs and a MySQL-backed data platform. The engineering team is fully distributed and values ownership, collaboration, continuous improvement, and building software thoughtfully. The Senior Backend Engineer will design, build, and evolve MarketTime’s ecommerce platform, working closely with Product and other engineers to solve complex technical problems, shape platform architecture, and deliver secure, scalable solutions. The role also involves mentoring engineers, driving engineering best practices, and helping maintain secure, reliable, and compliant systems. The technology stack includes Java 25, Spring Boot 4, MySQL, REST APIs, AWS, GitHub Actions, containers, SQS, Terraform, and React.

Requirements

Experience operating as a senior engineer or technical lead on Java backend applications.
Strong expertise with Spring Boot 3+ and the broader Spring ecosystem.
Strong proficiency with modern Java; new development targets Java 25.
Ability to write clean, idiomatic Java using features such as streams, lambda expressions, Optional, records, and pattern matching.
Experience with Hibernate/JPA or jOOQ.
Hands-on experience building and operating production workloads on AWS.
Proven ability to design and build RESTful APIs.
Strong SQL skills with MySQL or PostgreSQL.
Working knowledge of asynchronous messaging systems such as SQS, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ.
Experience building and deploying containerized applications.
Experience with GitHub Actions or other modern CI/CD platforms.
Professional hands-on experience with AI coding tools, sound judgment about verifying or rejecting their output, and understanding of data that must not be shared with them.
Solid understanding of software design principles and distributed systems.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives.
Self-motivated and effective in a remote-first environment.

Nice To Haves

Experience building and operating multi-tenant SaaS applications.
Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and GitOps practices.
Hands-on experience deploying and operating AWS services including VPCs, ALBs, EC2, ECS, SQS, and S3.
Working knowledge of React or Angular.
Understanding of payment processing systems, PCI DSS, and security best practices.
Background in ecommerce, fintech, or payment processing.
Familiarity with API security concepts including OAuth 2.0, JWT, authentication, authorization, and rate limiting.
Experience with test-driven development (TDD) and modern testing frameworks.
Experience establishing team practices for AI-assisted development, such as shared context and conventions files, review standards for AI-generated code, and safeguards for sensitive data.
Exposure to C#/.NET.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, deploy, and maintain Spring Boot services powering the SaaS ecommerce platform.
Design secure, scalable, highly available solutions that meet PCI DSS and other security requirements.
Design and build REST APIs that are intuitive, backwards-compatible, secure, and performant.
Collaborate with Product, QA, and other engineers throughout the software development lifecycle.
Design and optimize relational database schemas, queries, and data access patterns using MySQL.
Participate in architectural discussions and help drive technical decisions across the platform.
Write clean, maintainable, idiomatic Java using modern language features and engineering best practices.
Champion engineering practices including code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and documentation.
Use AI-assisted development tools while taking responsibility for the correctness, security, and maintainability of delivered work.
Own features from design through production, including monitoring and operational support.
Work in small, incremental pull requests with emphasis on code reviews, automated testing, and continuous delivery.
Help evolve the architecture by challenging assumptions and continuously improving software development practices.
Mentor and support engineers through technical leadership, design reviews, and pair programming.
Troubleshoot production issues and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
