About The Position

Altruist is transforming the multi-trillion dollar wealth management industry by building an AI platform for wealth professionals. We partner with financial advisors nationwide, empowering them to grow, optimize time and resources, and deliver superior outcomes for their clients. We're looking for exceptional talent to help us achieve our mission of making financial advice better, more affordable, and accessible to all. If you're passionate about challenging the status quo and want to do the most important work of your life, we'd love to meet you! Altruist is in the midst of an exceptional growth phase and we're excited to hire Senior Back End Engineers to join our growing Engineering organization. We have multiple teams hiring for high impact & high visibility projects, with a particular focus on the security, scalability, and reliability of the platform our clients trust with their assets. Our recruitment team will work with you to match you to the right opportunity to help you grow your career at Altruist. This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of being in the office three days each week out of our San Francisco FiDi office.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of software engineering experience building precise and scalable distributed systems with best engineering practices
  • You can own a well-defined problem end to end and drive it to production without needing close direction
  • Primarily a backend engineer but comfortable working across the stack; a core engineering background is preferred over a purely product-focused one
  • You've shipped work in security, scale, or infrastructure. This is a builder role, not a Security/AppSec role: we're looking for engineers who own remediation and deliver hardened systems
  • Ideally looking for a B.A. / B.S. degree in relevant fields such as Computer Science or similar Engineering/Mathematics degrees
  • You're technologically savvy and can easily get up to speed on modern tech stacks (we use Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, AWS, Postgres, Kubernetes, React.js, Typescript, GraphQL)
  • The pride you put into every aspect of your work is unparalleled and undeniable
  • Intentional dialogue is a superpower. You listen as well as you share your perspective with others
  • We're inspired by your unwavering determination to achieve success, no matter the adversity you face along the way
  • Your confidence is brilliant, yet ego-less. You possess a strong knowledge base, the ability to discover the unknown, and are open to differing perspectives
  • Identifying the problem is simply not enough. You're instinctually creative with your approach in finding solutions to roadblocks

Nice To Haves

  • Full-stack with a backend lean
  • Fintech, payments, or other security-sensitive, highly regulated environments

Responsibilities

  • Act as a leader and steward of engineering best practices, helping to mentor other engineers and develop impactful solutions
  • Independently take a defined problem from design through implementation and into production
  • Build and extend identity and access management capabilities: authentication, authorization, RBAC, and OAuth/OIDC flows
  • Implement improvements to our AWS and cloud infrastructure, including its security posture, configuration, and operational guardrails
  • Improve database performance, security, and optimization across high-volume, transactional systems
  • Harden APIs, services, and distributed systems against failure and abuse
  • Contribute to production reliability: participate in incident response and remediation, fix root causes, and add the observability needed to catch issues early
  • Partner with our Security/CISO team to turn identified gaps into durable engineering fixes you design and ship
  • Analyze and solve complex problems spanning multiple user personas and workflows
  • Focus on building and scaling services and user-facing web applications that are customer-centric, performant, and secure

Benefits

  • Stunning, amenity-filled office spaces in Culver City, CA, San Francisco, CA, and Dallas, TX. Our offices are intentionally designed for comfort, collaboration, and productivity.
  • Competitive total compensation.
  • Premium healthcare, dental, and vision insurance plans (HMO and PPO).
  • 401k savings plan with a 4% match and immediate vesting.
  • 16 week paid parental leave after one year of employment.
  • Professional growth and development opportunities including an employee mobility program and an annual L&D budget allocation for each employee.
  • Company perks program (includes discounts on pet insurance, fitness, cell phone plans, and travel, etc.).
  • Financial guidance program (includes counseling on navigating debt, tracking personal spend, saving and planning goals, home-purchasing preparedness, etc.).
  • One month work from anywhere policy (with the exception of a few countries).
  • Total compensation includes a competitive benefits package, along with a bonus program for eligible roles.
  • We review all employee pay and compensation programs regularly to ensure fair, equitable, and competitive pay.
  • By evaluating compensation on a regular basis, we are able to reward high performance and ensure all employees have opportunities for growth.
