Senior Avionics Engineer

Muon Space•San Jose, CA
•$192,000 - $212,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Muon Space is seeking a Senior Avionics Engineer to help design, develop, and test electrical hardware for next-generation spacecraft. The role works closely with engineers across disciplines to develop satellite systems, from early prototypes through hardware and software integration and validation. It is hybrid and requires working onsite at the company’s San Jose, California office three days per week. The engineer contributes to spacecraft avionics systems, including flight computers, power distribution, guidance and navigation, sensors, actuators, and communications. The role also includes schematic capture and PCB layout, hardware bring-up and testing, cross-functional integration and manufacturability work, technical documentation, and participation in design reviews. The engineer is expected to mentor colleagues and contribute expertise to the team. The stated salary range is $192,000–$212,000, plus an equity grant and benefits. Final compensation depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location. The position requires access to export-controlled information, so applicants must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility criteria.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of experience in hardware engineering, preferably with exposure to electronic systems; relevant internships and academic projects will be considered.
  • Familiarity with electronic components, circuits, and test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies.
  • Expert-level knowledge of schematic capture and PCB layout software, such as Altium or Cadence/Orcad.
  • Understanding of microcontrollers and common communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with embedded systems and embedded programming concepts, and comfort working in a Linux development environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to engineering challenges.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A strong desire to learn and contribute in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Meet the stated export-control eligibility criteria for access to export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field; the posting says this is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with environmental testing considerations such as vibration, thermal, and EMI.
  • Exposure to scripting languages such as Python for test automation or data analysis.
  • Experience with power electronics for space applications, such as batteries, GaN switching converters, or load-switch design.
  • Experience with FPGAs, SoCs, or embedded Linux platforms.
  • Leadership experience in clubs or on small teams.
  • Previous startup experience or experience working in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and development of spacecraft avionics electrical systems, including flight computers, power distribution, guidance and navigation, sensors, actuators, and communication systems.
  • Perform schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Bring up, test, and validate newly designed hardware.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate and test hardware and software components.
  • Build and test early hardware prototypes to evaluate design concepts and mitigate risks.
  • Work with mechanical, software, systems, and production teams to support successful integration and hardware manufacturability.
  • Contribute to design documentation, test procedures, and reports.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Mentor other engineers and advance the team’s capabilities in the engineer’s domain.
