Senior Avionics Test Engineer

Muon Space•San Jose, CA
•$184,000 - $208,000•Onsite

About The Position

Muon Space is seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior Avionics Test Engineer to own the architecture, development, and scaling of test infrastructure for satellite avionics, supporting the goal of zero hardware failures at launch. The engineer will drive test strategy, design test racks, and create custom PCBs or fixtures when needed. As Muon Space’s first electrical test hire, this person will help define team standards and establish the quality bar for electrical test infrastructure. The role is part of the electrical engineering team and collaborates with the test and reliability organization, which maintains the broader software infrastructure, so test development can begin alongside PCBA development. This is an onsite position in Muon Space’s San Jose, California office, five days per week. The role requires access to export-controlled information, so applicants must meet the applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements described in the posting.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in hardware test engineering.
  • At least 8 years of total relevant software and hardware engineering experience.
  • Strong knowledge of electronic components, circuits, and test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies.
  • Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB layout software, such as Altium or Cadence/OrCAD.
  • Understanding of microcontrollers and common communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with embedded systems and embedded programming concepts, and comfort working in a Linux development environment.
  • Strong scripting/Python skills and experience using AI to expedite script development.
  • Knowledge of Git or other change-control systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to engineering challenges.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Desire to learn and contribute in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to meet the applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements for access to export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with electronics for space applications.
  • Experience with FPGAs, SoCs, or embedded Linux platforms.
  • Knowledge of high-speed digital interfaces such as PCIe, DRAM, CSI, and 25G Ethernet.
  • Experience with RF test equipment and methodologies, including spectrum analyzers, VNAs, power meters, and frequency generators.
  • Familiarity with aerospace test and quality standards such as SMC-S-016.
  • Previous startup experience or experience working in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work with test and reliability teams to define shared hardware and software for automated avionics test racks, primarily for PCBAs.
  • Define the overarching validation strategy, test plans, and methodologies for spacecraft avionics, including flight computers, power systems, and RF/communication payloads.
  • Partner with hardware design engineers early in the product lifecycle to implement Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) requirements.
  • Write and maintain Python scripts based on the software test framework used throughout the hardware organization.
  • Develop rack self-test and preventative-maintenance methods so production teams can monitor and maintain test racks.
  • Guide and mentor junior test and hardware engineers, establish engineering best practices for the test team, and lead technical design reviews for test infrastructure.
  • Create custom electrical or mechanical fixtures when needed to make tests fast and easy to run.
