Senior Automation and Controls Engineer

Intrinsic•Mountain View, CA
•$159,200 - $217,300

About The Position

Intrinsic, an AI robotics group at Google, aims to reimagine industrial robotics by using advances in AI, perception, and simulation, with software and data at the core. Its mission is to make industrial robotics intelligent, accessible, and usable for more businesses, entrepreneurs, and developers. As a Senior Automation and Controls Engineer, you will design, build, and deploy robotic automation systems. You will work with cross-functional teams and customers to determine system requirements, propose automation layouts, and select and source hardware. You will program automation workcells and take robotics solutions from concept through successful delivery. The role involves ongoing collaboration with software developers, product managers, and researchers to invent, maintain, and refine robotic platforms.

Requirements

  • Degree in Controls or Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience applying robotics, PLC programming (for example, Beckhoff or Pilz), fieldbus communication, or motion controllers to systems deployed in manufacturing facilities.
  • Demonstrable experience designing automation cells with CAD and performing system simulation.
  • Experience selecting components and designing electrical and pneumatic schematics for automation equipment, including assembling designed electrical panels.
  • Proficiency debugging and wiring robotic industrial control systems.
  • Willingness to work in ambiguity, choose a direction, and drive toward a solution.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing and implementing safety circuitry and safety logic for industrial automation.
  • Experience working with and managing vendors, including writing RFPs or SOWs, managing vendor execution, and participating in system acceptance tests.
  • Passion for programming in high-level languages beyond low-level control.
  • Exposure to numerous industries that use robotic automation.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement robotic automation workcells, handling hardware selection, electrical design, and robot, PLC, and HMI programming.
  • Collaborate with product managers, software developers, and researchers to maintain, improve, and develop the robotic platform.
  • Source and integrate technology products into automation workcells.
  • Evaluate whether to build capabilities in-house or partner with external system integrators.
  • Develop concepts for robotic automation applications and assess the effort, feasibility, and cost of implementing them.
  • Establish hardware selection and PLC software standards using knowledge of industrial control systems.
  • Document and communicate work clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
