About The Position

This position offers a $2,500 signing bonus for eligible candidates. The Local Audit and Finance Division (LAFD) plays a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and strong financial management across Michigan’s local governmental units (LGUs). In accordance with Public Act 2 of 1968 (PA 2), Federal and State statutes, and established professional accounting and auditing standards, LAFD is responsible for developing and maintaining uniform accounting and reporting formats for counties, cities, townships, villages, and other governmental entities. Additionally, PA 2 and Public Act 71 of 1919 authorize the division to conduct audits of LGUs when specific statutory criteria are met. We seek a candidate who is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and committed to public service to serve as a recognized resource within our Audit Section. The successful candidate will: Lead the development, revision, and implementation of audit and accounting policies. Create, update, and maintain audit guidance, accounting manuals, and standardized forms and instructions for use by Michigan LGUs and their auditors. Provide expert interpretation of audit and accounting standards as they apply to local government reporting. Assist in shaping and enhancing internal policies and procedures to support the effectiveness and consistency of the Audit Section. Contribute to advancing uniformity, compliance, and best practices across local governmental financial reporting statewide. The preferred candidate brings strong technical expertise, sound professional judgment, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse stakeholders. This role provides a unique opportunity to support Michigan’s local governments and strengthen financial transparency across the state. PLEASE NOTE: New Hires for the Auditor classification will receive a one-time signing bonus of $2,500. The bonus will be paid out as $1,250 gross pay adjustment on the employee's first pay warrant and the remaining $1,250 will be paid upon completion of one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service. Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in accounting.
  • Three years of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor, including one year equivalent to an Auditor P11.
