About The Position

This Assistant General Counsel position reports directly to the Chief Counsel of Driver Licenses. As the Assistant General Counsel, you will represent the Department in trial and appellate work in civil and administrative cases, including at the Division of Administrative Hearings (DOAH). This position will be responsible for preparing administrative complaints, pleadings, briefs, and attending court hearings incidental to these cases. This position also prepares responses to appeals, including petitions for writ of certiorari.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in civil, appellate, and administrative litigation.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code, and Federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate resolution options and implement solutions.
  • Ability to use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
  • Must be a member of The Florida Bar in good standing.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing (no cancellations, suspensions, or revocations for a minimum of three years prior to employment and for the duration of employment; no more than three chargeable crashes or any violation of Chapter 316, Florida Statutes, during any consecutive three-year period prior to and throughout employment).
  • Must be able to pass a Level 2 background check and Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance, including a fingerprint-based check of criminal records.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two (2) years of litigation, administrative or appellate experience or a combination of all three.
