L3Harris•Canoga Park, CA
•$76,500 - $141,500•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking an intermediate-level materials and process engineer to join the engineering materials process team at its Canoga Park, California site. The role supports metallic materials design and production activities for missile programs under moderate supervision from senior engineers. Day-to-day work includes material process development, design support, non-conformance resolution, and materials documentation across missile system programs. The work schedule is 9/80: employees work 9 out of every 14 days, totaling 80 hours, and have every other Friday off. The engineer supports the selection and evaluation of metallic materials, manufacturing-process development and review, non-conformance dispositions, failure analysis, and interpretation of material standards. The role also involves preparing process specifications and technical documentation and collaborating with design, stress analysis, manufacturing, and quality teams to meet program and customer requirements. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if program needs require it; the posting specifies the ability to obtain a Secret-level clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of prior related material process engineering experience; or a graduate degree or equivalent and 0 to 2 years of prior related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 6 years of prior related material process engineering experience.
  • Practical knowledge of metallic materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret-level security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required by program needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Prior experience in aerospace, defense, or another high-reliability manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, AMS, or MIL-SPEC material and process standards.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic, radiographic, penetrant, or magnetic particle inspection.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or Excel for processing and presenting engineering data.
  • Familiarity with aerospace metallic-material manufacturing processes such as forging, casting, machining, welding, heat treatment, shot peening, and chemical surface treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the evaluation and selection of metallic materials, including titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, stainless steels, high-strength steels, and aluminum alloys, in accordance with engineering standards and program requirements.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and optimizing manufacturing processes for metallic components, including machining, welding, heat treatment, forming, and surface treatment.
  • Support non-conformance report dispositions by collecting, evaluating, and documenting material property data in accordance with specifications and engineering standards.
  • Support failure analysis and root cause investigations involving non-conforming metallic materials and hardware, including data collection, documentation, and disposition of findings.
  • Review and interpret AMS, ASTM, and MIL-SPEC material specifications and standards to help ensure compliant and traceable material usage.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining process specifications, work instructions, and engineering documentation for missile program requirements.
  • Work with design engineering, stress analysis, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure material and process solutions meet program and customer requirements.
  • Evaluate material and process data for validity, consistency, and compliance, and address general problems using prior experience and standard procedures.
  • Prepare technical reports, data packages, and process documentation supporting metallic materials programs.
  • Obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required by program needs; the posting specifies the ability to obtain a Secret-level clearance.
