Senior Associate, Material Process Engineer

L3Harris Technologies•Los Angeles, CA
•$76,500 - $141,500•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking an intermediate-level materials and process engineer to join the engineering materials process team at its Canoga Park, California site. The role supports metallic materials design and production activities for missile programs under moderate supervision from senior engineers. Work includes material process development, design support, non-conformance resolution, and materials documentation across missile system programs. The engineer supports evaluation and selection of metallic materials and helps develop, review, and optimize manufacturing processes. The position also contributes to failure analysis, compliance reviews, cross-functional engineering efforts, and the preparation of technical reports and process documentation. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if program needs require one, and be able to obtain a U.S. Secret clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of related material process engineering experience; or a graduate degree or equivalent and 0 to 2 years of related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 6 years of related material process engineering experience.
  • Practical knowledge of metallic materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret-level security clearance and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required by program needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Prior experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, AMS, or MIL-SPEC material and process standards.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing methods, such as ultrasonic, radiographic, penetrant, or magnetic particle inspection.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or Excel for processing and presenting engineering data.
  • Familiarity with aerospace metallic-material manufacturing processes such as forging, casting, machining, welding, heat treatment, shot peening, and chemical surface treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Support evaluation and selection of metallic materials, including titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, stainless steels, high-strength steels, and aluminum alloys, in accordance with engineering standards and program requirements.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and optimizing manufacturing processes for metallic components, including machining, welding, heat treatment, forming, and surface treatment.
  • Support non-conformance report dispositions by collecting, evaluating, and documenting material property data according to applicable specifications and engineering standards.
  • Support failure analysis and root cause investigations on non-conforming metallic materials and hardware, including data collection, documentation, and disposition of findings.
  • Review and interpret AMS, ASTM, and MIL-SPEC material specifications and standards to ensure compliant and traceable material use.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining process specifications, work instructions, and engineering documentation for missile program requirements.
  • Work with design engineering, stress analysis, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure material and process solutions meet program and customer requirements.
  • Evaluate material and process data for validity, consistency, and compliance, identifying and addressing general problems using prior experience and standard procedures.
  • Prepare technical reports, data packages, and process documentation in support of metallic materials programs.
  • Obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required by program needs; be able to obtain a U.S. Secret-level clearance.
