The Atlantic seeks a Senior Associate Editor to join the newsroom. This editor will play a key role in our expansion in the coverage of foreign affairs and national security. They should have a background in assigning and editing argument-driven essays and analysis, and be able to work independently as well as in close collaboration with other editors. This editor will be expected to quickly turn around essays from contributing writers and freelancers. The ideal candidate will be a strong line editor who is creative and opportunistic about coverage and assignments. They should have a strong desire to be on the news, excellent editorial judgment, be able to distinguish a fresh analytical take from more of the same, and display grace under pressure. Specific expertise is not required, but the successful candidate will have an interest in world affairs, some familiarity with the intricacies of American foreign policy and national security, and a drive to understand the complexities of a changing world order. Another plus is existing relationships with foreign policy writers and experts. The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.
