About The Position

The Law Department's Litigation Section represents the City of Detroit in all civil actions. This role involves defending the city in high-stakes civil rights jury trials, high exposure wrongful death motor vehicle lawsuits, exposing financial fraud in no-fault cases, prosecuting lawsuits against derelict commercial property owners, and litigating complex commercial matters, significant legislation, and public policy issues. The department offers a diverse and collegial work environment with a flexible hybrid work schedule.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an American Bar Association-approved institution.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in litigation specialties including civil rights police misconduct, motor vehicle negligence, motor vehicle no-fault, breach of contract, and municipal litigation.
  • Excellent legal writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Outstanding references from former employers.
  • License to practice in the State of Michigan.

  • Conducting depositions.
  • Handling motions hearings.
  • Conducting investigations and discovery.
