About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel / Assistant Corporation Counsel within the Office of the Mayor, Corporation Counsel Division. This role involves providing legal advice and representation to city departments on a wide range of legal matters. The position is based in Springfield, Illinois, and operates on a Monday-Friday schedule from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though hours may vary. The starting salary ranges from $75,000.00 to $105,000.00 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a non-union position, and the final application date is January 1, 2027.

Requirements

  • Hold a Juris Doctorate degree
  • Possess a valid license to practice law in the State of Illinois
  • Demonstrate strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities
  • Possess sound professional judgment and a commitment to ethical public service
  • Be able to interpret and apply statutes, regulations, and case law
  • Prepare clear and persuasive legal documents

  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in government, administrative law, litigation, or regulatory compliance is highly desirable.
  • Preference for employment in all positions with the city shall be given to applicants who are full-time city residents.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal research and provides advice and guidance to City departments on a wide variety of legal matters, including interpretation of ordinances, policies, contracts, employment issues, and regulatory compliance.
  • Handle additional legal matters as assigned by the Corporation Counsel, including municipal prosecutions, administrative hearings, and other related proceedings.
  • Represent the City and its employees in litigation matters in state and federal courts, including all phases of litigation such as motion practice, discovery, depositions, expert witness coordination, trial preparation, trials, and appeals.
  • Assign, coordinate, and review work performed by secretaries, paralegals, and other support staff as needed to ensure efficient case management and office operations.
