About The Position

City of Springfield is seeking applicants for Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel / Assistant Corporation Counsel. This role involves performing legal research, providing advice and guidance to City departments on various legal matters, handling municipal prosecutions, administrative hearings, and representing the City and its employees in litigation. The position also includes assigning, coordinating, and reviewing the work of support staff.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Valid license to practice law in the State of Illinois

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal research and provides advice and guidance to City departments on a wide variety of legal matters, including interpretation of ordinances, policies, contracts, employment issues, and regulatory compliance.
  • Handle additional legal matters as assigned by the Corporation Counsel, including municipal prosecutions, administrative hearings, and other related proceedings.
  • Represent the City and its employees in litigation matters in state and federal courts, including all phases of litigation such as motion practice, discovery, depositions, expert witness coordination, trial preparation, trials, and appeals.
  • Assign, coordinate, and review work performed by secretaries, paralegals, and other support staff as needed to ensure efficient case management and office operations.
