About The Position

The City is hiring for two positions at either the Senior Assistant City Attorney or Assistant City Attorney level. The Senior Assistant City Attorney performs advanced professional legal services on complex and highly sensitive assignments, providing legal assistance, advice, counsel, and representation to City government, elected officials, officers, and employees across assigned legal disciplines while exercising significant independent legal judgment. The Assistant City Attorney performs a variety of assigned legal work where procedures and precedent are well established and provides legal advice, counsel, and representation to City government, elected officials, officers, and employees.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited school of law.
• Admission in good standing to the State Bar of South Dakota.
• Senior Assistant City Attorney: Minimum of eight years’ experience practicing law.
• Assistant City Attorney: Minimum of three years’ experience practicing law.
• Experience preferably in public sector law, regulatory compliance work, or diversified program management that includes conducting research and/or investigations and analyzing data; an acceptable combination of education, experience, and training may also qualify.

Responsibilities

• Senior Assistant City Attorney: Handle complex and highly sensitive legal assignments.
• Provide legal assistance, advice, and counsel to City government, elected officials, officers, and employees.
• Represent City government, elected officials, officers, and employees in legal matters across assigned disciplines.
• Exercise significant independent legal judgment on advanced assignments.
• Assistant City Attorney: Perform assigned legal work where procedures and precedent are well established.
• Provide legal advice, counsel, and representation to City government, elected officials, officers, and employees.
