About The Position

This vacancy is only open to 1) current permanent City employees serving in the Architect civil service title or 2) on leave from the title or 3) candidates who are reachable on the Architect civil service list, Exam No. 3040, Exam No. 5009, or Exam No. 6012. As stewards of 14% of New York City’s land, NYC Parks builds and maintains clean, safe and accessible parks citywide and programs those sites with recreational, cultural and educational activities for people of all ages. Through this work, NYC Parks improves people’s lives, providing outlets for creative expression, opportunities for healthy recreation and exposure to the restorative beauty of the natural world. The Architecture Unit in the Capital Division designs, restores and/or modernizes existing or new Parks structures, ranging from a new recreation center to a historic house renovation. This work impacts neighborhood growth, public health and recreation in communities throughout New York City.

Requirements

  • A valid New York State Registration as an Architect. Current New York State Registration as an Architect must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
  • At least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project (for Assignment Levels II and III).

Responsibilities

  • Under direction of the Team Leader and Design Director of Architecture, develop designs and bid documents for new buildings and adaptive re-use of existing structures.
  • Provide rigorous technical reviews for projects at design milestones, with meticulous approach to constructability and details.
  • Produce high-quality construction documents for bidding and construction, including comprehensive drawings and specifications.
  • Manage all phases of project development from scope definition through construction administration.
  • Provide technical support throughout the procurement, bidding and construction processes.
  • Develop construction estimates and project schedules for supervisor’s approval. Ensure assigned projects meet approved budgets and schedules.
  • Review documents for constructability and bid readiness. Generate quantity take-offs and cost estimates for architectural projects once they are funded and the design process formally begins. Ensure documents are submitted to oversight regulatory agencies as required to obtain timely approvals. Review graphic and written design documents to ensure documents effectively convey the project's intent.
  • Represent projects and the Agency to outside organizations such as community boards, community interest groups and other city or state agencies.
  • Sign and seal architectural and other official documents and related applications for agencies having jurisdiction.
  • Coordinate project-specific interagency issues, such as permits, filings and approvals.
