About The Position

The Senior Applications Scientist at Cytiva generates scientific and technical insights supporting Cytiva’s upstream bioprocessing portfolio, particularly next-generation cell culture and perfusion applications. The role enables product development, commercial success, and customer outcomes by executing applications studies and providing technical leadership across bioreactor, cell culture, and cell-retention technologies. It serves as a technical link between R&D, commercial teams, Field Applications specialists, and customers, translating customer and industry needs into scientific understanding, technical capability, and product-development direction. The position is part of the Upstream and Fluid Management R&D Applications Team, based on-site in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and reports to the Director of Applications and Testing. The role designs and interprets studies from bench scale through manufacturing scale, contributes to cross-functional technical strategy, and produces scientific and technical communications that support development programs, commercial teams, and customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Multiple years of hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, upstream process development, bioprocess engineering, or biopharmaceutical manufacturing, including exposure to perfusion processes or intensified cell culture strategies.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting bioreactor systems and supporting upstream process development in laboratory, pilot, or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience designing experiments, analyzing scientific data, and communicating findings through technical reports, presentations, or scientific documentation.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and supporting technical discussions with customers, commercial teams, field-based technical teams, or other external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lift, move, or carry equipment up to 40 lb and manipulate equipment commonly used in large-scale cell culture.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience developing, operating, optimizing, or troubleshooting perfusion cell culture processes and associated cell-retention technologies.
  • Experience presenting technical content to customers, industry groups, conferences, workshops, or technical training audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and interpret applications studies across bench-scale through manufacturing-scale bioreactor systems, cell culture processes, perfusion operations, cell-retention technologies, and related upstream process platforms.
  • Provide scientific leadership on cross-functional teams, contributing to experimental design, technical strategy, data interpretation, and next-step recommendations for applications and product-development programs.
  • Partner with Product Management, R&D, Commercial, and Field Applications teams to understand customer challenges and translate them into experimental programs, technical recommendations, and product-development priorities.
  • Prepare technical reports, application notes, presentations, and scientific communications to support development programs, inform commercial teams, and demonstrate Cytiva technologies to customers.
  • Develop and apply technical expertise in mammalian cell culture, bioreactor operations, perfusion processes, and cell-retention technologies.
  • Serve as a technical resource for commercial teams, Field Applications specialists, and customers.
