About The Position

This position is responsible for training and assessing veterinary technical staff, as well as assessing and training research surgeons in basic techniques. It also involves a practical component, including administering anesthesia to large animal surgical models and potentially performing basic rodent technical procedures for researchers. The role supports the overall goals of the training team by training researchers and DAR staff as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of experience which includes laboratory animal and training experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
  • LATg certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Degrees in teaching or biological sciences are preferred.
  • Experience in monitoring anesthesia.
  • Experience in basic surgical techniques.
  • Experience in formal or informal training.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing and training researchers in aseptic technique, basic surgical competency, and anesthetic management (e.g., suturing, intubation).
  • Onboarding new veterinary technicians.
  • Assessing skills and practices of existing veterinary technicians.
  • Developing and coordinating continuing education for veterinary professionals.
  • Managing training for visiting vet tech students.
  • Administering and monitoring anesthesia of large animal surgical models, primarily swine.
  • Conducting procedural technical assists for researchers (e.g., blood collection, injections), primarily rodents.
  • Potentially managing other training staff directly or indirectly.
