Senior Android Engineer

Peraton•Tacoma, WA
•$86,000 - $138,000

About The Position

The Senior Android Engineer will design, build, and evolve high-quality Android experiences using Kotlin and modern Android frameworks. The role owns consequential technical decisions and partners with product, design, backend, quality, and iOS teams to ship reliable customer value. It is Android-first, with practical iOS experience expected to support cross-platform collaboration and occasional targeted Swift or SwiftUI contributions. The engineer will own complex Android features from discovery through post-release monitoring, guide technical direction across the Android stack, and improve application architecture, quality, reliability, performance, security, privacy, and release confidence. The position is based in one of the following locations: Falls Church, Virginia; Aurora, Colorado; San Antonio, Texas; or Tacoma, Washington. Peraton is a national security company and mission capability integrator serving government agencies and supporting every branch of the U.S. armed forces. The typical salary range is $86,000–$138,000. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Salary depends on factors including responsibilities, experience, education, skills, geographic location, and business and contract considerations.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial ownership of production Android applications; equivalent depth of experience is welcome.
  • Advanced Kotlin skills and strong knowledge of Android SDK fundamentals, Jetpack libraries, coroutines, and reactive state management.
  • Production experience with Jetpack Compose, including state, navigation, performance, testing, and interoperability with Views.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound architecture decisions and safely evolve a mature codebase.
  • Experience with REST or GraphQL APIs, local persistence, background work, authentication, analytics, and push notifications.
  • Strong testing and debugging habits, including using crash, performance, and product telemetry to guide decisions.
  • Experience shipping through Google Play, managing staged rollouts, and responding to production issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineering and non-engineering partners.
  • A record of mentoring others and improving team practices through influence and example.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Practical iOS experience sufficient for cross-platform collaboration, including hands-on experience reading and making scoped changes in Swift, SwiftUI, and/or UIKit.
  • Familiarity with Xcode, the iOS app lifecycle, navigation, concurrency, testing, code signing, and App Store release workflows.
  • Ability to compare Android and iOS implementation tradeoffs without forcing identical architecture or user-interface patterns.
  • Experience contributing to shared mobile conventions, API contracts, design systems, analytics taxonomies, or cross-platform feature parity.
  • Minimum education/experience qualification: 5 years with a BS/BA, or 9 years of experience with a high school diploma.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a consumer, subscription, healthcare, fintech, marketplace, or other reliability-sensitive mobile product.
  • Knowledge of Kotlin Multiplatform or another selective code-sharing approach, with pragmatic judgment about where sharing helps.
  • Experience with mobile CI/CD, build performance, feature flags, experimentation, and automated release tooling.
  • Familiarity with mobile security, privacy, accessibility standards, and threat modeling.
  • Experience leading migrations such as Views to Compose, monolith to modules, or legacy asynchronous code to coroutines.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design and implementation of complex Android features from discovery through monitoring after release.
  • Set and evolve technical direction for Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, app architecture, modularization, networking, persistence, and dependency management.
  • Write technical designs that surface tradeoffs, risks, dependencies, and migration plans before implementation.
  • Build accessible, responsive interfaces in partnership with product design and research.
  • Improve automated testing across unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end layers.
  • Strengthen Android app observability, performance, crash health, security, privacy, and release confidence.
  • Partner with backend and platform teams on API contracts, offline behavior, authentication, experimentation, and analytics.
  • Collaborate with iOS engineers on shared product behavior and mobile standards while respecting platform-native conventions.
  • Review code, mentor engineers, and improve the quality of technical decisions without becoming a delivery bottleneck.
  • Participate in planning, estimation, incident response, and continuous improvement of the mobile delivery process.
  • Contribute targeted Swift or SwiftUI changes when useful and collaborate across Android and iOS platforms.

Benefits

  • Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus, depending on the position.
