Senior Android Developer

TaivWinnipeg, MB
CA$100,000 - CA$150,000Hybrid

About The Position

Taiv is seeking a Senior Android Developer to join their growing team in Winnipeg, Canada. This role focuses on the software side of their custom Android boxes, which are used in thousands of venues. The primary responsibility is to ensure the stability and reliability of this fleet of devices. The developer will work on expanding and standardizing logging and diagnostics, fixing performance bottlenecks, and resolving low-level bugs and compatibility issues at the framework and vendor layer of Android AOSP. This position involves close collaboration with firmware and embedded engineers in an IoT environment, maintaining the reliability of devices at scale.

Requirements

  • Operate independently on vendor Android and AOSP-layer work without needing instruction or guidance.
  • Comfortable debugging complex, ambiguous problems in a low-level, multithreaded, performance-sensitive platform (memory leaks, crashes, performance issues).
  • At home working alongside embedded teams in an IoT environment.
  • Comfortable reading Linux and Android device logs, understanding diagnostic and debugging signals, and using them to trace device activity.
  • Work well with firmware and hardware engineers, taking ownership of the software/hardware boundary.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of professional Android development experience.
  • Experience at the Android framework layer with vendor Android, AOSP, or embedded/IoT Android environments, not just app-layer development.
  • Experience developing and maintaining system-level components: init scripts, system services, and device-specific configurations within the AOSP build system (Soong/Make).
  • Solid understanding of Android OS internals: init system, Binder IPC, permissions model, and OTA update mechanisms.
  • Strong native debugging skills across the stack, from build artifacts through OS runtime: memory leaks, deadlocks, ANRs, concurrency issues, and boot-time performance.
  • Experience with industry-standard IoT device-level logging and diagnostics.
  • Comfortable working in various languages, including C/C++ and Java/Kotlin.

Responsibilities

  • Expand and help standardize logging and diagnostic systems to track issues and their causes.
  • Diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks within the Android framework layer.
  • Build systems to identify, prevent, and reduce crashes and devices going offline.
  • Support the Firmware team with integrations and troubleshooting across hardware releases.
  • Participate in a shared on-call rotation for the device fleet.
  • Collaborate with embedded, hardware, and firmware engineers on low-level bugs and compatibility issues at the software/hardware boundary.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options
  • 100% employer-covered health benefits
  • Flex-time
  • Unlimited paid vacation
  • Gym membership
  • Catered lunches 3x per week
  • Dog-friendly office
  • Hybrid work model
