About The Position

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is hiring a Senior AI Engineer in its Facets Claims, Integrations & Operations and BlueCard/ITS division. This fully remote, newly created role will establish the AI integration and automation foundation for Core Payer Applications. The engineer will lead the design and development of AI platform capabilities, MCP (Model Context Protocol) services, and enterprise integrations that connect AI agents with business applications, APIs, and data sources. The position works at the intersection of healthcare operations and artificial intelligence, helping shape how technology is extended for mission-critical applications and adopted across the organization.

The engineer will lead the development and productionalization of AI solutions for healthcare payer use cases, architect AI models and production systems, and work with product teams, business stakeholders, and internal Lines of Business to identify opportunities and turn complex needs into actionable solutions. The role also defines model evaluation and validation frameworks and provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.

The position is remote, but final interviews at the company's Chattanooga, Tennessee headquarters are required. Sponsorship is not available.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in STEM or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least 5 years of relevant work experience in analytics, technology, software engineering, healthcare, or related equivalent experience; academic experience is included.
• At least 3 years of hands-on experience specifically with machine learning, deep learning, and preferably AI models such as LLMs or diffusion models.
• Experience handling large, complex datasets to build and optimize sophisticated data science pipelines.
• Deep experience with machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, natural language processing, and associated libraries such as Hugging Face Transformers.
• Experience deploying and managing machine learning models in cloud environments; GCP Vertex AI is preferred, while AWS SageMaker or Azure ML is acceptable.
• Expert proficiency in Python and relevant data science and machine learning libraries.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to architect, design, and implement complex systems and lead technically challenging projects from conception through deployment.
• Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to project team members, business personnel, and leadership.
• Strong technical leadership and mentorship capabilities.
• Effective communication and influence with technical and non-technical coworkers and stakeholders.
• Strong organization, reliability, ability to manage multiple complex tasks, work ethic, and strategic thinking.
• Experience designing and building enterprise-scale integrations, APIs, or platform services in a regulated environment.
• Experience with AI agents, MCP (Model Context Protocol), tool calling, or similar frameworks connecting AI systems to enterprise applications and data sources.
• Experience translating business workflows into scalable AI-enabled solutions.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s or PhD degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, AI, or Machine Learning.

• Experience with GCP Vertex AI.

Responsibilities

• Lead the ideation, development, and productionalization of sophisticated AI solutions tailored for healthcare payer use cases.
• Architect, design, and implement complex AI models and algorithms using Python and cloud platforms such as GCP Vertex AI.
• Partner with product teams and business stakeholders to define and prioritize opportunities for advanced AI techniques to solve business challenges and drive process automation.
• Research advances in AI and champion adoption of cutting-edge techniques and methodologies within the team.
• Architect and develop robust, scalable, and efficient systems and code bases for deploying AI models in production, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Advise internal Lines of Business, gather requirements, and translate complex needs into actionable AI solutions.
• Define and oversee evaluation and validation frameworks to ensure AI models meet business requirements for accuracy, reliability, fairness, and performance.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers in AI development, model implementation, and system design.
