About The Position

Sedgwick is hiring a Senior AI Engineer for a remote role open to all U.S. states. The engineer owns a build stream end to end within a pod, from shaping the problem with a Principal through implementation, production operation, and measuring business outcomes. The role designs, builds, and operates production Generative AI agents, workflows, and applications, and develops full-stack software using Python and React. The engineer owns AWS deployment and operations, Terraform infrastructure as code, and GitHub Actions CI/CD. They implement evaluation, observability, human-in-the-loop controls, security, auditability, PHI handling, and reliability measures for enterprise AI systems. The role also integrates AI services with enterprise and legacy systems, stewards an assigned shared capability, and may co-develop with vendor delivery teams. The Senior AI Engineer works directly with examiners, nurse reviewers, and operations staff to translate observed work into scoped services, workflows, and UI changes. The role includes mentoring Junior AI Engineers, troubleshooting and optimizing production services, and recommending improvements to architecture, platform capabilities, and engineering processes. Travel is required as needed, including onsite work with claims or Managed Care operations and vendor delivery teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Six or more years of software engineering experience, including at least three years shipping production Generative AI agents, workflows, or applications with evaluation, failure handling, and a human review loop, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating production workloads on AWS; cloud certification without production ownership is not sufficient.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, React, GitHub Actions, and Terraform, including ownership of CI/CD and infrastructure rather than only editing templates.
  • Strong full-stack engineering skills in Python and React, with working knowledge of SQL, REST APIs, and service design.
  • Hands-on AWS experience building, deploying, and operating production services, including networking, identity, and operational concerns for a regulated environment.
  • Hands-on GitHub Actions and Terraform experience, including ownership of pipelines and infrastructure as code, review, drift, and recovery.
  • Production command of Generative AI agents, workflows, and applications, including tool use, orchestration, evaluation, and human-in-the-loop patterns sufficient to ship and operate systems.
  • Ability to implement services in alignment with enterprise architecture, governance, PHI handling, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work with examiners or operations staff to scope work and comfort serving as the only engineer in the room.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced Transformation Office, including pairing with vendor engineers when required.
  • Strong mentoring, collaboration, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to meet or exceed Performance Competencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience embedding with business users or a vendor delivery team to co-develop rather than receiving a completed specification.
  • Experience in insurance, claims, healthcare, or another heavily regulated operational domain.
  • Experience with machine learning, model fine-tuning, and/or graph databases such as Neo4j.
  • Experience with PydanticAI or an equivalent agent framework, agent observability, and AI Ops / LLMOps.

Responsibilities

  • Own a build stream end to end within a pod, including problem shaping with the Principal, implementation, production operation, and instrumentation of business outcomes.
  • Design, build, and operate production Generative AI agents, workflows, and applications, including request orchestration, tool execution, state management, and enterprise-system interaction.
  • Develop full-stack software in Python and React, including services and user interfaces.
  • Own deployment and operation on AWS, using Terraform for infrastructure as code and GitHub Actions for CI/CD, including environments, secrets, and repeatable production promotion.
  • Implement evaluation, observability, and human-in-the-loop controls, including output provenance, confirmation for consequential claims actions, and evidence that workflows are ready for increased autonomy.
  • Implement authentication, authorization, logging, monitoring, and error handling to meet enterprise security, auditability, PHI, and reliability requirements.
  • Integrate AI services with enterprise and legacy systems, including APIs, data platforms, and event streams, using approved, non-invasive patterns and versioned contracts.
  • Steward an assigned shared capability, such as context, documents, agents, or assurance, and block duplicate builds in other pods when appropriate.
  • Co-develop with vendor delivery teams when required, using shared repositories in Sedgwick accounts and a shared definition of done.
  • Work with examiners, nurse reviewers, and operations staff to turn observed work into scoped services, workflows, and UI changes.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Junior AI Engineers, promoting engineering standards, code quality, and operational excellence.
  • Troubleshoot production AI services and lead root cause analysis and performance optimization for latency, throughput, cost, correctness, and reliability.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to architecture, platform capabilities, and engineering processes for the stream and shared substrate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel as required, including onsite work with claims or Managed Care operations and vendor delivery teams.
