Senior AI Automation Engineer

Later•Boston, MA

About The Position

Later is hiring an AI Automation Engineer to embed across Operations, Finance, Marketing, Customer Success, and other teams, replacing manual, repetitive work with durable AI-powered tooling. The role combines engineering, internal consulting, and coaching: the engineer builds practical automations and helps non-technical colleagues develop their own. The position focuses on solving business problems, rapidly shipping initial solutions, and determining when prototypes should be hardened for wider organizational use. The engineer will work across Later Influence, Later Social, and Later Creator, with exposure to senior leadership and broad visibility into company operations. Success includes delivering production automations with documented business impact across at least three teams; increasing non-technical colleagues’ ability to build automations; creating reusable components and templates; becoming a trusted automation partner; and developing a perspective on Later’s automation roadmap.

Requirements

  • A track record of building and shipping automations, internal tools, or AI-powered workflows that delivered measurable business impact.
  • Strong fluency with modern AI tooling, including LLMs, agents, RAG, and prompt design.
  • Comfort connecting APIs, scripts, and no-code or low-code platforms.
  • A business-first approach focused on problems and users rather than technology, with the ability to clarify problems through effective questions.
  • Resourcefulness and a bias toward action, including shipping a working initial version quickly and iterating.
  • An understanding of when a solution can remain a one-off and when it needs to scale for organizational use.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical tradeoffs to non-technical audiences and coaching others.
  • Comfort working with data, including pulling, cleaning, and reasoning about it.
  • Ability to prioritize high-value work, meet deadlines, adapt quickly, and keep outcomes clear.
  • Ability to anticipate risks and opportunities, connect decisions to long-term growth, and build trust through proactive insights.
  • Curiosity, willingness to learn, and ability to apply learnings quickly.
  • Collaborative, resilient, resourceful, and solution-focused approach to change and removing roadblocks.
  • Accountability, honesty, transparent feedback, and a commitment to high standards.
  • Empathy and collaborative skills that foster trust and inclusion.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an internal-tools, RevOps, BizOps, or applied AI function.
  • Experience supporting or training non-technical builders, such as citizen developers or operations teams managing their own tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Work with non-technical stakeholders across Operations, Finance, Marketing, Customer Success, and other functions to understand workflows and identify high-impact automation opportunities.
  • Translate ambiguous business problems into clear technical solutions and sharpen stakeholder problem definitions.
  • Build automations and internal tools using AI-native platforms, scripting, APIs, and other appropriate technologies.
  • Ship working initial solutions quickly so stakeholders can validate their value.
  • Integrate LLMs, agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and prompt design with existing systems to deliver workflow outcomes.
  • Harden successful prototypes for production with reliability, observability, error handling, and reusability.
  • Determine whether solutions should remain one-off tools or be developed for broader organizational use.
  • Create monitoring and documentation so automations can operate unattended and recover gracefully from failures.
  • Coach non-technical colleagues building automations by reviewing their work, unblocking them, and developing their skills.
  • Run enablement activities such as working sessions and office hours, and create shared documentation to grow the citizen-developer community.
  • Explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical audiences and help colleagues learn to build solutions themselves.
  • Identify patterns across teams and develop shared components, templates, and frameworks.
  • Create reusable prompt libraries, integration patterns, and automation templates.
  • Partner with Engineering and IT on platform decisions that support durable automation capabilities.
  • Document the business impact of production automations and help shape Later’s automation roadmap.
