About The Position

We are looking for a Senior Advisor - Health for the Health, Safety, Environment, and Security team to provide technical leadership and specialist health expertise across our underground and surface mining operations. This role is accountable for developing, implementing, and continuously improving occupational health programs, ensuring health risks are identified, controlled, and effectively managed in line with regulatory requirements and Rio Tinto standards. Working closely with operational leaders, contracting partners, and the broader HSES team, you will help embed a proactive health culture and support our ambition to be a best‑operator mine. Reporting to the Principal Advisor Health, Safety, and Security and working in a collaborative community within the team, you will:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, Industrial Hygiene, Health Sciences, or a related discipline
  • Valid driver’s license
  • 7+ years’ experience in occupational health or industrial hygiene roles, preferably in underground or heavy industrial mining environments with detailed working knowledge of mining health hazards, controls and program management.
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies such as MSHA, OSHA and implementing health management systems.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Comfortable working both underground and in surface operational environments.
  • Proficient in health data management systems, for example Cority, and Microsoft Office tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the delivery of site occupational health programs, with a strong focus on underground health hazards (e.g., dust, noise, diesel particulate matter, thermal stress, hazardous substances).
  • Provide expert health advice to operational leaders to proactively identify and manage health risks.
  • Support compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and applicable occupational health legislation and standards.
  • Oversee health exposure monitoring programs, medical surveillance, and hygiene assessments.
  • Investigate health‑related incidents, near misses, and emerging trends, recommending sustainable corrective actions.
  • Partner with contractors to ensure consistent awareness of health standards, compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to training, coaching, and capability building across the workforce.
  • Support continuous improvement through health audits, data analysis, and performance reporting.
